video widget

    Hi,

I have a new video that I have uploaded to my media file.

I wish to have it in my primary sidebar as a widget. Please advise how I can have this video seen in my sidebar and playable. (I know I can link it in a post but would like to have it as a widget in the sidebar so gets seen on all sidebar pages).

I thought having it in my media file (videopress) would be better than linking to youtube as people stay on my site – is this correct and advisable. I will still upload separately to my youtube/FB etc.

    Thanks

    Mariska

You can actually embed the video directly into a Text Widget! Just follow these steps:

    1. Start here:

    https://exploreyogatravel.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php

    2. Click the video you would like to have on your sidebar

    3. On the right-hand side of the pop-up screen, scroll down and copy the shortcode as shown in this example:

    4. Navigate here:

    https://exploreyogatravel.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

    5. Put a Text Widget in your sidebar and paste in the code we got from Step #3.

The main benefit is that you have full control over the files. You don’t have to rely on another service like YouTube. For example, if service there was disrupted for some reason, you wouldn’t be affected. Even if you were to upload your videos to YouTube rather than directly to your site, you can still embed them directly in the page so visitors can watch the video without leaving your site:

    Hi again Jeremy,

Great work, again! Very clear explanation.

Just a couple of questions please:
    1) Is there a way of making the video thumb nail bigger? When playing at this size it is very small.
    2) Also, when I play it from the wp website in full screen it has lost some of the clarity as when I play it full screen from the original file? Is there a way to bring it back to the original quality?
    3) If not able to improve the quality, would it appear clearer if I used a you tube link?

    Thanks again.

    Me again,

Just some advice re: the video in relation to SEO and google liking mobile friendly websites?

Is there any issues re: above if I stick the video on my first page?
Will this potentially slow down the mobile user first page experience due to the video and therefore not please the Google Gods?
Or does a small video like this one not matter in terms of upload speed?

    Thanks again.

Is there a way of making the video thumb nail bigger? When playing at this size it is very small.

In this case, we’re limited by the width of the sidebar container. As you can see in this screenshot, the video is currently at the max width of the sidebar:

    http://d.pr/i/1dzX3

We would need to either A) expand the sidebar (which can get pretty convoluted as we’re going to have to adjust the entire layout) or B) add the video into a page (since pages have a larger width).

Also, when I play it from the wp website in full screen it has lost some of the clarity as when I play it full screen from the original file? Is there a way to bring it back to the original quality?

When you expand to fullscreen, can you make sure you click the “HD” button in the top right-hand corner? The quality there is looking good on my side. You can force HD using the hd=true attribute like this:

    [wpvideo IbLt6sSn hd=true]

If not able to improve the quality, would it appear clearer if I used a you tube link?

I think the above solution may work. With YouTube embeds, we don’t have control over the quality so I’m not sure if this would come out clearer.

I don’t think there would be any issues here of sticking the video to the front page. It may slow down the mobile experience a tad, but as you mention, the video is relatively small. Also, it’s not going to autoplay so it should have less of an effect on page load. Your page is currently loading in around 3 seconds on my side. Happy to test if you put the video on the front page to see what kind of effect this has.

(Keep in mind I’m no expert in Google!)
