Video within theme, or as background
-
Hi, I have a 20 second looping .mp4 video which I’d like to include on a page as a background (perhaps with text on top). How do I do this?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
There are at least two WordPress.com themes that allow an optional full-width background video that displays in the header area. These would be Twenty Seventeen and Swell, the latter being a premium theme that has two areas where a full-width videos may be displayed on the optional home page template. On Swell the home page template can presumably be assigned to any static page, not just the home page. The “Background Video or Image” section of the Swell theme guide says:
The home page template comes with two areas to display background videos. It supports Vimeo and YouTube. If you don’t want to use videos, you can opt to show images instead.

Unlike Swell, Twenty Seventeen doesn’t have optional page templates. According to my tests, on 2017 the video header may only be displayed on the front page, but it will display in the header area of the front page whether that page is set to display the latest posts or a static page.

Thanks, much appreciated.
However, I was looking to do this in Erin – I’d have thought there was a generic option to include a looping video background???
It needs to be amp4 I’ve copied to one of my folders though, not one that is hosted elsewhere.

Not that I’m aware of. It may be possible with a plugin. I’ve called for staff attention to the topic. Staff will respond here.

Hi there,
Video backgrounds are not a standard feature, no. A theme very specifically has to be designed to include that, and only a handful of themes on WordPress.com, and relatively few WordPress themes overall, support that.
There are video background plugins for WordPress, but you’d need to be on our Business Plan to use those, and we cannot guarantee compatibility of any of our themes with a plugin we didn’t create.

I have another remotely hosted website which I’m anticipating to also redevelop in a WordPress structure.
You’d mentioned if I was hosting with WordPress.com I’d have to have a Business Plan, however for my other site if I install WordPress with that 3rd party hosting service, am I able to install plugins etc. without WordPress restriction and expect my WordPress install there to be fully featured i.e. features available?
Many thanks, John.

If you use WordPress at another host you’d be using the open source version of the software made over on WordPress.org, yes. So you should have full customization control there.
