Videopress for iOS
-
I have a WordPress.com blog which is heavy on the video side. It’s been running for a couple of years now. My problem is that my embedded videos won’t play on my iPad because it won’t play Flash.
I wrote about this a while back and I got messages suggesting this was all sorted and Videopress was now HTML 5 supportive but I’m tearing my hair out trying to see how. I use Firefox on a Mac (Power Mac G5) and no matter how I encode my videos the Videopress uploader only allows me to use the Flash uploader. Can anyone help? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The mobile device has to have flash installed in order to display them. iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches do not for security and stability reasons. Some other mobile devices do not have it either.
P.S. Have you locate the iPad forum? http://ios.forums.wordpress.org

Thank you. I know of Apple iOS’ issues with Flash but Videopress announced back in March that they had somehow resolved the problem by using HTML5 encoding. How or why this would enable WordPress.com video embeds using Videopress to play on iOS devices remains unclear but that seems to be the idea.

Would you like to contact Staff for help? If so then here’s the contact link. http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

They should be working properly. I have a few that are myself.
Which blog are you referring to?
-
It looks like you don’t have sharing or embedded enabled in the videos. This is actually required to the HTML5 player, otherwise the Flash player will display as it’s a much better way to protect your content.
You can enable sharing and embedding by editing the individual video files in your Media library.

I have the same problem as artsymbol, my VideoPress videos don’t play on my iPad.
The share setting is not an option for me because mine will be a commercial site, and so I don’t want users to be able to share the videos. In any case I just tried it, and it made no difference.
Looking at artsymbol’s site, he appears to have solved the problem as his videos play fine on my iPad
The wordpress staff support page also seems to be out of action!
Thanks for any help.

I forgot to add, my site, still under construction is:-

The only videopress hosted video is the at the bottom left called, ‘test of videopress’

Thank you Macmanx, enabling sharing appears to have solved the problem.
That is up to a point – some videos which originate in another application still don’t play. I need to check how they differ from those that do – perhaps something in the compression export setting.
I do share Bernie’s reservations however regarding sharing – that was the reason I had disabled sharing.

@artsymbol
As your blog is a free hosted WordPress.com blog I do not know what you mean by “commercial”. The types of blogs allowed and not allowed are found here > http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/In a nutshell no blogger initiated advertising, retailing or reselling the work created or services provided by anyone other than yourself is allowed on free hosted wordpress.COM blogs. E-commerce transactions via shopping carts and the like cannot be conducted on free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM
http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/If you have any further questions about advertising and/or affiliate links and/or ecommerce on a free blog from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM please contact Staff directly using this link. http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/
If you do require an ecommerce site, advertising and/or affiliate links you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org Refer to > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Timethief, I think your post is directed at the wrong person!
I was the one who said my site was commercial, and it is a wordpress.org site. I’m only posting here to get some videopress support!
Cheers,

Hi bernieraffe :)
This is what artsymbol posted above and what I was responding to:I do share Bernie’s reservations however regarding sharing – that was the reason I had disabled sharing.

My site is not “commercial” or intended to be, (I never used the word) however I do reserve the right at some later point to make commercial use of my own work via another platform. Clearly that would be harder if my videos were freely embedded elsewhere.
It seems that I am forced into a choice of having my videos available on mobile devices and losing control of their use or keeping that control but not having them available on those devices.
I accept that this may be out of WordPress’ hands. If there was an alternative I’d be very happy to learn of it.
Plus. there are still some videos which even though they are enabled still won’t play on my iPad v.1
-
My videos are posted on youtube, I only purchased a VideoPress subscription so that I could take them off youtube, and then I wouldn’t have to share them.
It’s starting to look like a mistake!
Anybody know what’s up with the support site, and whether it will be back up soon?

I’ve had exactly the same problem and have been working with Paolo at WordPress Support for over 2 weeks now. I’ll try to share what I’ve learned.
From what I can tell, having your Videopress videos sharable is necessary in order to embed them on non-wordpress.com (wordpress.org, self-hosted sites). The interesting thing is that my videos DO play on my iPad on my test wordpress.com site but they do NOT play on my real, self-hosted site. So there’s definitely something weird going on there.
There’s a new version of the Videopress plugin (1.3) which needs WordPress 3.2. At WordPress’s suggestion, I used a test site and installed 3.2 and then the Videopress 1.3 plugin and this did NOT solve my problem. According to wordpress support the videos are “supposed to play” – but they don’t. And they’re still looking into it. They’ve verified that my Videopress hosted videos do NOT play on the iPad or other iOS devices. These videos were, by the way, all uploaded as .m4v. If someone has actually gotten this to work on a NON wordpress.com site then I’d be very interested to learn how it was done and the format for your videos.
@timethief
Perhaps you could stay on topic and focus on the problem at hand. Which, looking at the OP, has to do with videopress and IOS and has nothing whatsoever to do with commercial vs non-commerical sites and hosting on wordpress. -

Are you saying that this new version of VideoPress 1.3 is supposed to allow videos to play on iPhones and iPads even if the videos do not have the sharing option set (which would be great news), or do they still have to be shared? -
No, that’s not what I was saying, sorry. I don’t think that’s a feature of Videopress 1.3 from the release notes. But neither have I tried.
I was merely hoping that Videopress would allow videos to be played on iOS devices on non-wordpress.com sites…..as it says it’s supposed to. But I’ve never been able to get it to work this way.

Hello,
I have a self hosted WordPress website http://www.conchsaladtv.com/ on which I use VideoPress plugin (v1.3) to stream videos. However, I can not get my videos to open on my iPhone (iOS 4.2.1) even though I can play the video on videopress.com homepage on my phone.
I have the sharing option enabled from my wordpress.com account as well. Please guide me how I can enable videos on iOS devices. My wordpress.com URL is lindseymccoy.wordpress.com
Thanks
