Videopress for iOS
-
@mohsinoffline You can’t. That’s the whole problem right now. And this has now been confirmed as a bug/issue by WordPress Support to me. According to them this will be addressed in the *next* version of the Videopress plugin which I assume will be 1.4. They have no idea on timeline according to the email I received.
I think the whole sharing/non-sharing thing is a complete red-herring. Yes, you have to have the videos on your wordpress.com account and sharable in order to have them play on your self-hosted blog and this makes complete sense BUT this has nothing to do with them not playing on iOS devices.
Sucks. Given that this is functionality which Videopress was supposed to have provided I wish some developer or happiness engineer would be willing to give the community some idea of when we can expect this to work properly?

@lochcolin
I agree, I think the whole sharing/non-sharing thing is nonsensical, however at the moment you don’t have to share a video in order to play it on a self-hosted blog.Let’s hope they can sort this out in the upcoming v1.4
Also, I wish they’d improve the clarity of the film posters, they look awful!

Has anyone had trouble with videopress videos not displaying on Android? You would think they would, since Android supports Flash. I can’t watch my video on Android from either the wordpress.com page or through my self-hosted page.
Help!
-
Has there been any development on this? I’m stuck with the same issues. I was under the assumption that VideoPress would work on iOS devices (self-hosted). That’s why i purchased VideoPress. Apparently it won’t work. Does anyone know when it does?
If not, i must look for another solution. But that would be very disappointing, because i like VideoPress.
Help, please…

Yes, especially after the big announcement that IOS devices were supported. It’s the lack of communication that gets me, why can’t someone just be honest, say what the problems are, and provide an approximate timescale of when it, or if, it will be fixed.
Cheers,

I do wish WordPress would address this issue sooner!
I too signed up to Videopress with the assumption that I would be able to seamlessly upload video and have it playback on desktop (flash) and, primarily iOS & mobile devices (ogg etc).
This could be a very fine product, indeed, I hope it will be. But I most protest against being sold a misleading/ambigous product. Poor show.
I can report that I am able to embed video on my self-hosted site with sharing disabled. That works…
+1 – The motion to improve the video posters. How come the guys at wordpress/videopress get hi-res posters huh? What about us? We payed our money thinking we’d get that same same cool level of features!

I contacted the support team about the poor quality poster images, they made 2 points-:
1) Improving the quality would impact on bandwidth.
2) the quality is the same as YouTube.I responded and said I thought the bandwidth answer was just a poor excuse, and as far as the 2nd point is concerned, YouTube is free, VideoPess isn’t, so should do better.

I got in touch with one of the Videopress plugin developers whose info I got from the trac logs (http://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/log/video/). I asked him if he knew what was going on with the video press plugin and he said that he wasn’t privy to Automatic’s release schedule. When I replied back and asked him if the Videopress plugin was still being worked on….I got silence.
Which doesn’t mean that it isn’t being worked on but I just *wish* someone from the WordPress Support immunity cared enough to post a comment letting the paying customers know what was going on. Recognizing that this isn’t an official support forum, the happiness engineers certainly seemed willing enough to help out before this was diagnosed as an official bug and now there’s black silence on anyone from Automatic’s camp.
@bernieraffe – Indeed, the bandwidth increase for pushing out *1* still image??? That seems crazy to me as well. You’re not asking them to HD the entire video!
I still hold out hope that there will be some movement here but as more and more time goes by I simply feel like asking for my money back. I suppose if enough people do that or comment on Videopress’ bugs in their communities/social media sites….if there is some financial impetus for them to fix it then maybe they will. I sure as hell won’t be paying for another year for a service that doesn’t work the way they say it does.

1) I’m not able to play VideoPress videos in iOS. This was clearly part of the reason why I purchased VideoPress, and would expect some type of credit if not resolved soon.
2) I agree with others in this thread that not being able to display/play videos on my commercial WordPress.org site unless the video is ‘shared’ makes it very LESS THAN IDEAL for a commercial site. I’m creating training videos and I don’t want viewers to share or embed them. I only use a WP.com blog so that I can use VideoPress on my .org site. The sharing issue might be a deal breaker unless I can’t find another commercial solution for affordably streaming long videos. If anyone has other alternatives for streaming 1hour+ commercial videos please share.
3) I agree with others in this thread that the poster images need improvement being it’s a paid service.
4) What is the max size video supported? The VideoPress site says 2GB, but the media uploader in WP.com says 1GB. I know it’s off topic, but it’s just one more thing about VideoPress that is not clear.

Volunteers answering forum questions cannot help you with this issue. If you would like to communicate directly with Staff then please use this link to do that. After you use the searchbox below the search results at the bottom of the page there will be a section that says “Have you found the answer to your question?” You can choose either “Yes I found the answer to my question.” or “No I didn’t find the answer to my question and I would like to contact support for help.” The no option will reveal the contact form.
-
Thanks, will do.
I think I figured out the sharing issue, which is a big one for me. I needed to configure ‘Media -> Restrict embed playback’ and add ‘restriced domains’. So far that seems to work as I hoped.

@timethief Although I understand your point about this not being the official support channel, it’s also obvious that happiness engineers do actually peruse and participate in these forums as they have in this *very* thread. If they don’t want people to expect help here then they shouldn’t participate and they should have admins pointing people to where they *should* go for help. They have set an expectation and they are then disappointing paying customers who are left in the lurch.
And volunteers answering forums questions CAN help with questions. Of course they can – that’s kind of what these forums are all about. If he wants his money back….and hey, I completely understand it if he does, then that would have to go to Videopress support.
But, for example, I can say off the top of my head that his 1GB/2GB issue is realtively easily answered. Videopress gives you 2GB of free storage but limits you to 1GB per individual file. Hey! An answer! From a volunteer!!! What gives??!
Videopress has not had a single entry in it’s trac log (http://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/log/video/) in over 3 months. I’m not very optimistic that this is getting the attention that it deserves. I don’t think that anyone is working on this problem.

@lochcolin
I’m so sorry your are unhappy with my reply. In the event that you have not noticed it I believe Staff deal with support tickets in the Staff Questions forum first, and only monitor these forum threads. My thinking was that if members who are having issues have not filed support tickets, I ought to supply instructions for posting to the Staff Question forum. I’m also assuming as Staff have only been back from their workshop for a day they probably will have a lengthy backlog of support tickets to address, so they won’t be closely monitoring these threads as they are very busy.
Please feel free to assist as many members as you can by sharing the information you have derived from your communication on this issue with Staff member Paulo.

Thanks for the file size clarification. Although the VideoPress website states
‘VideoPress supports videos up to two hours in length and uploads up to 2 GB in size.’
(features page). So to me it is still ambiguous, or possibly mis-information. I put in a support request regarding that question as well as the iOS issue I’m having.
Will try to post back here if I get a response.

If anyone has other alternatives for streaming 1hour+ commercial videos please share.
I’ve switched and it’s brilliant and economical, works on IOS, and you can upload your own poster image. Individual videos up to 5gb.
-
@bernieraffe Thanks, I may switch to Vimeo Pro. Looks like a really good option, even though it does cost more annually.

Just thought I would let the followers of this thread know that Videopress plugin 1.5 was released. I updated the plugin through my wordpress interface and, like that, all my videos work on my iPhone/iPad on my self-hosted site! Hooray! A long haul but I’m very happy!!!
-
I’m using Videopress plugin 1.5 and videos are NOT working on my iPad2. (I deleted cache before checking.)
Poster images shows, video is not scaling to fit page, video won’t play.
Still looking for resolution.
-
Interesting…and weird that yours don’t work.
What format were they uploaded into your wordpress.com site in? Mine are .mp4. If you login to your Media site in your wordpress.com site, is the checkmark for “Display share menu and allow viewers to embed or download this video” clicked? Mine is.
Perhaps try to mimic those settings and see if you have any luck. Are you still seeing the ‘Flash is needed’ message next to your videos on your iPad2 or is that gone now?
Perhaps let others know what format your videos are in so they can potentially help.
Good luck.
