Videopress not working on about 1/4 of my videos.

I made loads of videos the other afternoon–all exactly the same way, all .wmv format. They all play fine on my laptop and have the same Properties details. I uploaded them all using Videopress, but about 1/4 of them won’t work on WordPress.com. It says they’ve 100% uploaded, but when I go to edit them, I can’t preview them. The preview screen is black and it says ERROR and tells me to try using a supported format. But they ARE in a supported format. What’s the deal? A 75% success rate is not good enough for something I’m paying for, and now I’m going to have to go remake a ton of these videos.

Could you please send me the links of the videos that aren’t working?

    Thank you!

    I’m confused. I don’t have a link because I didn’t publish them–since they don’t work.

Should I re-upload one and publish it as password-protected it and send you a link and password?

I found one video that isn’t working at https://laurasalas.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=4836&action=edit

How were these videos created? did they come straight off a camera? or were they edited in video editing software? If they were edited, is it possible to export the file as a different format (.avi, .mp4, .m4v, .mov, or .mpg) ?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yep, that’s the one I just re-uploaded. Sorry, didn’t realize you could just access my Media Library.

All the videos were made on my webcam. None were edited in any program. They were all made as .wmv files and uploaded directly to wordpress as is.

I see. So even though all videos were created the exact same way, some can’t be processed properly? What software are you exactly using?

I’ve been usingthe Cyberlink Youcam program that came loaded on my HP laptop.

It seems the non working video can be converted. Is there an option within Cyberlink Youcam to save/export the videos as a different format (like .avi .mp4 .mov etc) ?

  • Unknown's avatar

No–You can make the video in avi or wmv, but once it’s made, you can’t change it. I’ve used an online converter to convert one of my nonworking video files to .mp4. It appears to have worked, but it was a pain and time-consuming, considering I now have to do a bunch of conversions for all the ones that failed. And this doesn’t answer my basic question of why I’m paying for a product that only works 75% of the time using a format VideoPress says it accepts? I don’t trust that it won’t happen again. And the files that VideoPress wouldn’t process work fine in other venues (my laptop, youtube, etc.). So what’s going on with VideoPress/WordPress? How can I make sure this doesn’t happen again?

  • Even though we can accept .wmv files, the one you uploaded uses a proprietary video codec which we can’t transcode.

I recommend using http://www.mirovideoconverter.com/ to convert those to MP4s. It’s free and much quicker and easier than using an online converter.

OK, thanks. Converting seems to be working. But should I no longer use the Cyberlink Youcam program to make videos–is this going to keep happening? Is there a decent free webcam program that does not have proprietary video codec? And how can I tell that up-front? I made a test video using Cyberlink, and it worked fine. So then I did the whole huge batch, and about 75% still worked fine. But not the other 35%. So how do I determine which programs will work ok with Videopress. I was under the impression when I got it that any .wmv would work…

  • I’m not aware of webcam programs on Windows, so I wouldn’t be able to suggest any.

My best recommendation would be to just record with the program you like, convert the videos to MP4 with http://www.mirovideoconverter.com/ and then upload them.
