Videopress Shortcode Autoplay Unmuted with Beaver Builder
-
We have a specific use on one page that requires a video to autoplay with sound. I understand video autoplay is generally discouraged, and that browsers may force mute even if a block is set to autoplay with sound. But I’m hoping Videopress has the capability to autoplay with sound.
I’m using the Videopress shortcode to autoplay the video. Since we use Beaver Builder as our page builder, I can’t use the native WP video block with the option to mute/unmute the video. We have other elements on this page that use a Beaver Builder feature we need, namely to fade-in content after 30 minutes. The content that fades in correlates with the video that autoplays on page load.
The problem with the current configuration is that the video is muted, but it’s not obvious to visitors that it’s muted, and it’s not a obvious how to unmute it. The first minute of the video is a stationary title card, so by the time someone notices the video is muted, they may have already missed 1 minute; if they unmute and return to beginning, the timing of our fade-in content is off.
I see that Videopress allows annotations when using the Gutenberg block editor, so that seems like an option for prompting visitors to unmute, but I’m not using Gutenberg. I could also add a prompt beside the video telling visitors to unmute, but they may still miss the very beginning of the video.
So I’m looking for a way to just autoplay with sound using the Videopress shortcode. Thanks.

Hey there, this is actually a compliance issue across all major browsers: videos that auto-play must be muted.
If people are missing out on a video because they can’t tell it’s a video without sound, I’d recommend encouraging users to click play instead, so you can have sound on by default. Sorry we don’t have more control over this!

otherwise, is there a built-in way to display a sound icon or unmute button on the video?

Hi there,
The design of VideoPress is intended to be minimal so it works on a broad range of sites without clashing visually. Because of this it does not typically show the player controls unless the site visitor were to hover over the video (or click on mobile) and there is not an option for a persistent player interface.
I’ve suggested this enhancement to our developers but I’m not able to provide a timeline on when or if a visual “unmute” icon would be implemented. With this in mind you may wish to consider other video options as it may be the case that other providers will offer a visible mute (unmute) button whereas VideoPress does not have that option currently.
Hope that helps!
