Videopress: Starting to panic now!

  • Unknown's avatar

Our uploaded video on Videopress only play the audio track not the video content.

It’s not the up-loader, I’ve tried with Flash and Browser, both return the same problem.

We switched to Videopress hosting because schools and institutions block content from all free site on their own network because of dubious content.
We thought that by changing to Videopress that we could guarantee that the content would be suitable for all and that the viewer wouldn’t get a list of similar titles showing.

We are getting phone calls hourly that our video content can’t be accessed and now we are starting to panic.

I need to know what’s happening as a matter of urgency!

    Hello there David,
I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I have flagged this thread for Staff attention. I’m afraid you will have to be patient waiting for them to get back to you as they have a backlog of support tickets to respond to.

Might the problem be with the source file? Can you upload it to, say YouTube and see if the video works there?

I can see this video perfectly fine, btw: http://bubblegumclub.org/alton-towers-trip/

Thank you timethief and raincoaster, I’ve spoken with a friend in the UK and he can see the videos fine.

The source files are VLC.mpg files and they were playing perfectly until about a week ago.

I seems for some reason that viewers in Ireland can’t view the video but can hear the audio. Strange.

I’m wondering, maybe, they were uploaded with flash uploader but since then flash has updated and maybe just maybe that’s causing the problem.

They upload and play fine on YouTube etc.

Because we are a Children’s Charity we changed our hosting to videopress, free hosting sites are blocked by institutions, schools and hospitals where children can access the Internet because of dubious content.

We changed to Videopress so that we could guarantee that content would be suitable for all audiences and that there would not be a list of similar title options shown.

I’m anxious to be able to rectify this as soon as possible.

    Best Regards,
    David Harris

I may have located the possible problem, everybody that only sees a black screen and hears the audio have recently updated Flash player to the latest version 10.3.183.5

    Taken from the Adobe Forum.

10.3.183.5 bug with shared libraries and goto statementsWe detected a severe bug in the latest flash player (10.3.183.5) running a customers commercial flash 6 application. This AS1 application uses shared libraries and loadMovie calls. It has been running for more than 100,000 users/year problem free since the release of flash player 6/7 until yesterday. The 10.3.183.5 flash player unloads all content at specific points resulting in a empty (black) screen. You can call it a crash. There seems to be bugs in the execution of gotoAndPlay() and gotoAndStop() and in the management routines of shared libraries because we could avoid the black screen crash by commenting out the goto handlers or unbinding linked items from shared libraries.

    Our testing configruations:

    Win XP, IE8, FF5
    Win 7, IE9, FF5
    Mac OS 10.6, FF5
    Mac OS 10.7, FF5

Under Mac OS 10.7 there is a freezed screen instead of a black screen, but the player context menu tells us that there is no movie loaded like in Windows testing configuration.
In all environments the black screen doesn’t occur on later player version than 10.3.183.5.

Please fix these bugs or give us informations about a workaround for the “black screen effect” in flash player 10.3.183.5 or rather a statement.

May have to try the Adobe Flash 11 beta if WordPress can’t find a solution.

  • I can’t see the problem myself, and I’m running 10.3.183.5 too.

Can you link us to a specific post or page displaying the problem?

    Our Video Page

I’ve tried it on various computers in different locations and any that have updated recently show the black screen with audio running normally.

Any computer that hasn’t updated recently is fine with no problems.

    Best Regards,

FWIW-On Chrome 13.0.782.112 m and Flash version 10,3,183,5 I had no trouble seeing or hearing the Videopress vids on your site. I’m not in the UK or Ireland.

FWIW – Pacific coast of the U.S. Your HeliLift video is playing fine now:

    Firefox 6.0
    Flash 10.3.183.5
    Windows Vista

  • No issues here either, Pacific coast as well, running Chrome, Safari, and Firefox with Flash 10.3.183.5.

Can you think of any common trait that all of the computers you tested share?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Internet Explorer 8 ?

  • Hm, that would probably be more of an IE 8 bug then, or a bug limited to Flash 10.3.183.5 on IE 8.

Is there any chance that you could upgrade to IE 9, or try a different browser, like Chrome or Firefox?

I’ve tried Firefox upto and including 11 beta1, I have also tried Google Chrome both with the same effects.

Adobe have suggested I retro-grade to an earlier version from archives and see if it is ok. will try that tomorrow when I have a clear head.

If anyone wants to try a replicate the problem OS is Windows XP Professional sp3 2002 and browser is Internet Explorer 8.

P.S. system won’t allow Internet Explorer 9 says we need to upgrade to Windows 7.

We are a childrens charity and all the computers are donated (when companies upgrade) Maybe when we’re donated newer computers then we’ll look for Windows 7.

I think I have a solution for you, or at least I’ve narrowed down the cause of the problem.

Many, MANY bloggers in the UK are having trouble with images; there appears to be some kind of blockage between them and wherever WP hosts their images. The blockage appears to be on the ISP side, in other words; it’s your internet service provider. It applies to static images and I guess WP hosts video images on the same server. If I were you I’d contact your ISP and explain this to them in detail and get them to whitelist those image servers. I’ll also flag this for staff attention; you’re not the only one with this problem, and they ALL seem to be from the UK or Ireland.

Well, no, it’s not just UK and Ireland. I just purchased the video upgrade and uploaded a video, Savy Tells a Story. It plays OK in the media library but when I embed it in my post http://wp.me/ppEA4-2VB and preview, I get black screen and sound only on the same computer, browser, ISP, etc. Do you have any idea what’s going on?

  • Yeah, it’s definitely not happening for me, on Safari 5.1, Firefox 6, Chrome 13, and IE 9, all running Flash 10.3.183.5.

I’d recommend trying to temporarily disable any firewall or third-party security software that you have, just to see if that’s getting in the way.

Am also getting broken images, but no problems whatsoever in seeing the videos as O mentioned above.

@rain, interesting. I am neither in the UK or Ireland and I am routinely getting the broken image link in posts (even my own) more often than not.

  • I’m starting to wonder if there’s just one ISP being bad. I’ve checked myself over Time Warner at home, AT&T on my iPhone, and Virgin Mobile on my MiFi with no issues.

What ISP are you folks under?
