Videopress video width
-
Since a few weeks the videopress video player always is full page width and can’t be adjusted by w= values. This also means the click-to-play image often gets distorted. Is this is a bug or intended?
-
Hi again @jveondell, would you link to an affected page so we can take a look? The only site on your account here seems to be brand new, without any VideoPress videos, so I’m guessing you’ve got another account.
-
Hi supernovia, can’t link to a specific page, but I noticed this with baskerville theme, though it’s probably videopress or jetpack related. You can try inserting a videopress video anywhere and adjust its width, the player will always be full page width. Only the video inside the player will adjust it’s size. Earlier, w= adjusted the player size, too.

Hi there,
Have you tested this locally or on a published site? We need to have a look at it so we can try and replicate it and see if it’s a bug we can fix.
-
Hi fstat, on a published site. I can’t link to anything, but please just try it yourself: add a videopress video, reduce width to something like 400, and see what happens.
Until August or so, the videopress player width was reduced, now only the video inside the (full width) player gets reduced.

It appears to have worked just fine: https://cld.wthms.co/N70fUy
This was by way of using the shortcode
[wpvideo video-id w=400]per https://en.support.wordpress.com/videopress/#resizing-a-videoOne consideration, it sounds like you’re using the self-hosted version of WordPress, WordPress.org.
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If so, you’re using Jetpack for the VideoPress videos, and I’d recommend reaching out to their support at https://jetpack.com/contact-support/?rel=support
-
nope, wordpress.com.
Not sure how to interpret you screenshot. Could you link to your test page? I tried it with Baskerville theme.
-
What is the URL of the site you’re working on, so we can see the problem in action there?
The only site on your account here has no video content and is using the Maywood theme.
-
problem persists, screenshot here: https://postimg.cc/KRTff0yw
this is w=400, but player still full-width. baskerville theme.
-
Please tell us the URL of the site you’re working on so that we can assist you with that.
-
As stated twice already, I can’t link to a specific page. Please try it yourself using baskerville or other themes. I simply inserted the videopress shortcode with w=400.
-
Then it sounds like you’re using a self-hosted WordPress.org site, since the only WordPress.com site on your account here has no content and is not using the Baskerville theme.
To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
As a self-hosted WordPress.org site, it would be using the Jetpack plugin for VideoPress, so I recommend contacting their support at https://jetpack.com/contact-support/?rel=support
Please understand that we cannot support self-hosted WordPress.org sites in the forums here.
-
Again, it has nothing to do with my account. And it is about wordpress.com, not org. Please try to reproduce it. Thanks.

There appears to be a certain browser dependency, too. I see the issue in Firefox and Chrome but not Internet Explorer on Windows. Mobile devices may be different, too.
-
The screenshot you gave is 404ing right now. But, oddly, I am actually seeing the issue here on our videos now.
We’ll see if we can dig into this more. Thanks for the report.
-
haha, yes this is exactly the effect I’ve been talking about :-) It happened about two months ago. Maybe it is to optimize mobile sites, or maybe it is a bug. Thanks for looking into it. (My screenshot was auto-deleted, but looked exactly the same.)
-
It looks like archiveorg videos and maybe others are affected too: https://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/the-internet-archive/
Is this a browser issue, or some optimization for mobile sites?
-
Hi there,
We have reported that in our VideoPress team and we’ll get back to you as soon as we hear from them.
Thank you for reporting this!

Our team is still looking into the issue internally. I will see if I can get an update on their progress.
Thanks,
