Videos using gigya code are not displaying when not logged in
-
Can anyone explain why video players using gigya shortcode are not displaying to users and members when not logged in, and, therefore, presumably not displaying to non-members either?
I’ve periodically used videos in the sidebar in text widgets since I discovered, perhaps a couple years ago, that you could do this. I normally use Gigya code for video players in the sidebar, because Gigya allows autoplay, which I use occasionally. I have a bunch of text widgets containing videos saved in the “Inactive Widgets” section of my widgets page. I sometimes move one of these over to the sidebar, usually near the top, for a while.
A couple of days ago, I noticed that the videos in such such sidebar widgets were not displaying. The text describing the content of the videos were displaying, but the not the videos. I’m guessing that it’s because of the gigya shortcode. Later I noticed that videos using gigya shortcode in a page or post were also not displaying when I wasn’t logged in. This means that non-WordPress member visitors, and visiting WP members who aren’t presently logged in, will see a big space where the video should be.
I removed them. But I’ve just placed one of them, for illustration, at the very bottom of the right sidebar widgets.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Embedded video players in posts and pages using Gigya shortcode are now failing to appear: a big bland space where the player used to be. I’ve used such players for at least two years without issue. While the issue with Gigya shortcode videos in the sidebar was resolved by logging in, not so in this case. They are invisible whether logged in or not, using the most recent Firefox and Google Chrome browsers.

gigya is not officially supported, so there’s really not much insight I can give you.
FWIW-while logged out I saw two YouTube videos at the bottom of your right sidebar (Charlie Parker Interview and Barney Kessel-Autumn Leaves). Now that I’m logged in, I can still see them. Chrome 30 and FF 24.
Have you tried the browser troubleshooting suggestions?

justjennifer,
Hi and thanks. Gigya may not be officially supported, but their are forum threads which recommend their use without incurring any untoward response from staff as far as I know. Also, I’ve been using Gigya for two years or so without a problem until now.
Their are other signs that I have a significant browser issue which I’ve recently mentioned in other forum threads (disappearance of all of my publicize buttons while using Firefox, and muting of all embedded Youtube videos on the site) so you might be on the right track. I frequently (several times a day) clear my browser cache and cookies, and just today replace the browser, though I didn’t do an advanced scan of the previous install when removing it (with Revo Uninstaller), so corruption might have been carried over.

Corrections to my last post:
Paragraph 1, sentence 2: first “their” should be “there”.

Thanks for telling me about the two sidebar videos. Interesting that you could see them when logged out because both that you mentioned use Gigya code and are invisible to me when logged out. Did you log out and clear the cache, etc.? Sometimes when I log out, I’m not completely logged out.

Hi again,
The first time I visited your site was while I was logged out of WordPress.com with Chrome 30 and then when I was logged in with an entirely different browser, FF 24. I saw the videos both times. Since I’d never visited your site before that, it shouldn’t be a caching issue.

Is there any chance you are using a YouTube playlist and not just single videos? I know that there is a problem there following code changes on YouTube’s side.

justjennifer, Thanks for your help.
Fixed the Gigya issue, and the missing publicize buttons. A special section of AdBlock was blocking social media buttons. They were probably visible to you. I had selected that feature by mistake.
The Gigya issue is also fixed after doing a fresh install after removing personal settings on the previous browser. Not sure how that was fixed. It might have been AdBlock as well.
However, YouTube videos are still all set to mute by default. That rules out browser issue there.

No. I embed only single videos. I don’t know if WordPress supports playlists. Looked into it years ago, and they didn’t then. The problem is unrelated to embedding though because the same thing occurs when I visit YouTube.
I’ve noticed some cases where if I unmute them on a page of mine (I often have 10-20 videos in a page) they stay unmuted even if I leave the page and return. But they might not keep the changes if I log out.
I’ll start a separate thread for this issue.

Meant to say “independent of embedding”. It’s also independent of WordPress and blogging. So maybe I should look elsewhere for answer.

The Youtube muting issue is widespread. See the following thread in Google Groups titled: All YouTube audio is muted.

Is it only YouTube videos that you’ve embedded via the Gigya Shortcode that this affects?
