View page opens in new tab
-
Recently I’ve noticed that, when I update a page and then view it, it opens in a new tab. I do a lot of editing on the nominated blog and I am getting very confused with all the new tabs. I thought best practice was to open links that take users to another website in a new tab but to open links to new pages on the same website in the same tab, eg, this is the view expressed here: http://uxmovement.com/navigation/why-external-links-should-open-in-new-tabs/. What’s changed since then as, at least on my desktop, I find it non-productive to keep having to close edit tabs I no longer need to keep open.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
I would think that whether a link opens in a new window or a tab depends upon browser settings.Recently I’ve noticed that, when I update a page and then view it, it opens in a new tab.
I was unable to reproduce the results you describe. I’ve never previously found that a “View Page” or “View Post” tab or link in a page or post editor (classic versions) respectively would open in a tab when clicked on. My tests today found that such tabs or links in the editors still open in new windows.
-
I further found that links in page or post editors, as well as links found in public page content, still open in a new window when I check “Open new windows in a new tab instead” at Firefox Tools > Options > General page.

It is the “Page successfully updated. Looking Good. ‘View page'” button on the updated edit page. It opens the updated page in a new tab in Firefox, Chrome and IE. I have made no changes to the settings in any of these browsers and this is a new behaviour I haven’t previously observed.

I don’t find a “Page successfully updated. Looking Good. ‘View page'” button in the page editor. The message I see when I update a page is simply “Page updated. View page,” which appears above the page title. The phrase “View page” is a link which opens the page in the same window. Where is the button you refer to?

Okay. Thanks for the screen shot. Previously when I attempted to access a page editor at My Sites, I was redirected to a classic page editor. On my second attempt just minutes ago I was able to run a test on the new page editor. The “Looking Good” part appears, but the “View Page” button opens the page in the same window, just as it does at the classic page editor.
I’ll tag the topic for staff attention. Please wait for staff to respond.

…just as it does at the classic page editor.
I mean the corresponding link in the classic editor. It isn’t a button, but appears over the title field.

Hi there,
The newer editor (at https://wordpress.com/post for posts and https://wordpress.com/page for pages) will always open the post or page in a new tab or window. That’s the expected behavior for that editor.
I’ll pass along your feedback about expecting it to open in the same window to our team, so they can consider that for future updates. Thanks for sharing that! :)

Perhaps I don’t understand what is meant by opening in a new window vs. opening in the same window. In each case, new and and classic page editors, the “View Page” link above the title when left-clicked causes the editor to be replaced by the visible page. It seems like a new window, but I thought the phrase “open in a new window” would imply that the present window would remain open, so that in this case you’d have both the editor and the page open. This does not happen. That’s why I said it opened in the same window in each case.
I’m rather unfamiliar with the expected result of left clicking on a link because it has been my usual habit for many years to open links by right clicking and choosing either “Open in new tab,” or “Open in a new window.”

Correction:
I retested in the new page editor. The link does open in a new window. I’d evidently failed to notice in previous tests that the page editor remains open.In the case of the classic page editor, the corresponding link doesn’t open in a new window; instead the editor is replaced by the page when you left click on the link.
Btw, can someone direct me to a forum topic regarding a script to be placed in a Firefox add-on that will redirect the new page editor to the classic editor?

Btw, can someone direct me to a forum topic regarding a script…
Please ignore this request. The script that redirects posts from the new editor to the classic works for pages too. I’d forgotten that I disabled it temporarily to do the aforementioned testing.
