View stats from my own visits; clicks not being recorded

  • Unknown's avatar

The Blog Stats Widget displays the total number of views to your blog (not including your own views).

However, I’ve just visited my site at http://www.creationtonewcreation.com a number of times today, and every time I visit, another hit is registered, all made by same visitor. I suspect it’s counting my own views as well. Is this possible?

Also, is it possible that people are clicking on PDFs I’ve uploaded onto pages or posts, and these are not being recorded?

    Many thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Howdy,

For your site, if you were not logged in to WordPress.com when visiting the site, then those visits would be recorded or if you were logged into a different account that isn’t associated with your site, those would be recorded as well.

If you’re logged in using the account associated with the blog, it would not be counted.

What you’re describing shouldn’t occur, if you’re logged in.

For PDFs, when folks view/download the PDF, that is not counted as a view. We have a bit more on what doesn’t count as a view at http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/

If you have any questions or need anything else, please let me know. Cheers!

Hi Kraftbj Many thanks for your reply. The query about PDFs relates to PDF documents I have uploaded and that are viewable or downloadable via a PDF icon I have placed on the webpage or post.
On the stats there is a counter called CLICKS, which says that “Clicks” are viewers clicking outbound links on your site.
This counter does certainly record clicks on these PDFs from time to time. But there are fewer than I expected. Because there are so few, I wonder if it is recording ALL the occasions when people click on the PDF icon. Is it possible some clicks are not recorded?
Secondly, what does it record? Does it record only clicks that open the PDF on the screen to view it? Or does it also record rightclicks and then choosing ‘Save link as…’ (i.e. when the user does not also view the PDF on the screen)? Many thanks for any help you can give on what exactly is recored this. Regards, Rob

  • Hi Rob,

A bit of clarification – the PDF views are not counted as “Views” in your stats. As you said, they are included as Clicks.

I’m asking our data team for clarification on if the right-click and “Save Link As…” is counted or not, as I’m not 100% sure and don’t want to give you incomplete information. My limited understanding is that you may be correct that they aren’t counted.

The data team is out at a meeting this week, so may be a few days until I hear back. I’ll let you know as soon as I do. Thanks!

  • Thanks for your patience. Generally, we do count “Clicks” when an user right-clicks on a PDF link; however, not all browsers report back to us when that happens.

In other words, we try to count all of those as clicks, but it isn’t perfect.

If you have any questions, please do let me know. Cheers!
