Viewer option not listed?

  • Unknown's avatar

I don’t see the Viewer user setting available in the dropdown. I do need several pages of my website to be private, and for each viewer to have their own unique password to access the pages. What is the best way to accomplish this when that dropdown option is not available, or how can I make it available?

    Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

I’m not sure I know what Viewer user setting you’re looking for. You are welcome to password-protect individual posts and pages on your site. We have details about how to do that here: Password Protect a Post

However, there’s only one password per post or page — there isn’t a way to set individual passwords for different people.

If you’d like to make your entire site private (instead of just a few posts/pages) you can do that by changing your site’s privacy settings: Privacy Settings

In that case, when you invite someone to view your site they will need to set up a WordPress.com account and log in each time they want to view the site.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Sorry for not providing enough detail. I would like my visitors to have unique passwords to access certain pages, but it sounds like it is all or nothing. Is that correct? If so, my best option may be to mark my entire site private.

I’ve changed the homepage to private. However, when I go into Dashboard/Users/Invite New/Role, the Viewer option is not listed in the dropdown choices. According to this help page (http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/), it is the type of role I think would best suit my blog.

Tips on what I need to correct to make the option accessible?

Also, is there a way for me to assign usernames and passwords and distribute them? That would be ideal for our content.

    Hi there,

That’s correct — there isn’t a way to give each visitor a unique password to view a certain page on your site. You can either give out a single password per page to all visitors (by password-protecting each page) or you can make the entire site private so that only the viewers you invite can see your site.

Tips on what I need to correct to make the option accessible?

For the Viewer option to appear on your site, you’ll need to set the entire site (not just one page) to private. You can do that under Settings > Reading in your site’s dashboard, as described here: Privacy Settings

If you don’t see the Viewer option appear right away after you make that change, you may need to refresh your browser or clear your browser’s cache.

Also, is there a way for me to assign usernames and passwords and distribute them?

No, each viewer you invite to your site will be asked to set up their own WordPress.com account. Once they have a WordPress.com account, they will be able to view your site.

Please let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)
