I have shared my blog link with a number of friends. They have told me they are not allowed access, that they have to create an account to view anything? Is this true, or am I not sharing the correct information with them?

If you share a Private site with friends, they must have a WordPress.com account to access it. This is because they will need to go to your Private site while logged in to WordPress to request access using their WordPress.com account, and you will be able to give them access (you will receive an email asking you to grant them access). This is the only way you will be able to monitor who views your site — that is, without password protection.
Password-protected pages and posts mean that, while your site is Public (i.e. even people without a WordPress account can access it), to see anything, readers will need a password which you have sent them.
You can make pages/posts password-protected by going to My Site > Site > Pages/Posts, finding the page/post you want to make password-protected, going into the editor, opening the Document settings, and finding ‘Visibility: Public’ under the Status and Visibility settings. Change this to ‘password protected’, create a password, and send it to your friends.
Regardless of whether you make posts password-protected or not, you will still need to make your site Public in order to let others see your site without requiring a WordPress.com account. You can publish your site by going to My Site > Manage > Settings, scroll down to Privacy, change the setting to ‘Public’ and click Save settings.
