Vigilance Tags/CSS
-
We would like to switch to the Vigilance theme on our WordPress.com blog, but the big problem is that the tags show up at the top of each post and that really screws up our format. We want to move the tags to the bottom of each post, but that doesn’t seem to be possible even after we upgraded the CSS editor.
Is there anyway to fix this?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The fact you have linked your wordpress.com username to tour twitter profile is not helpful when posting to this forum. Please link it to your wordpress.com blog. Alternatively, when posting to the forum please post the URL for the blog your refer to.
Is there anyway to fix this?
The web designer coded the theme to dispaly tags exactly where he/she intended them to be displayed so there is no “brokenness”. I think you mean is: Is there anyway to change this? I leave that to a volunteer who is experienced with CSS to answer.
Suffice to say that search engines view and treat Categories and Tags in exactly the same way. So if you simply chose not to assign any Tags and only use Categories the display would be at the end of the posts and you will achieve what you want without spending any money or exerting any major effort.
BTW you can convert Categories to Tags very easily. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/category-management/#converting-categories-to-tags

It looks like the use of “child themes” may be needed to accomplish this.

With luck, someone with more experience will be able to tell you exactly what to do.

@grosurf
Please stop posting wordpress.org stuff here. Doing so is not helpful. It only contributes to confusion. The fact remains that the only themes we can use at wordpress.com are the wordpress.org themes which have been adapted to run on wpMU (wordpress multiuser). Those themes are found here > Appearance > Themes in a wordpress.com blog which is what the OP has.If you wish to recommend that Staff consider adapting child themes then the correct thread to post that into is found here. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-recommendations?replies=101 You will note that the list dates back to 2007 so don’t hold your breath.
-
@timethief I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m on WordPress.com, and I assumed the question was as well.
-
-
I’m fully aware of the existence of the Vigilance child themes which are available for wordpress.org blogs. I use one on my self hosted wordpress.org personal blog. Unless or until wordpress.com staff adapt the coding the Vigilance child themes cannot be run on wordpress.com software.
-
Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.
-
-
@davemass I’m not sure @timethief’s link for converting categories to tags helps either, because what you need is the opposite, to convert tags to categories.
-
The bottom line is the bottom line. CSS editing is theme specific at wordpress.com. At wordpress.com we cannot use stylesheets from themes that are not found here > Appearance > Themes

Hey timethief. Thanks for the quick response. Is there a way to do the opposite and change tags to categories? That might solve a lot of problems quickly if, indeed, they search engines handle them the same way.

@davemaass
Yes, you can also convert Tags to Categories.Categories can be selectively converted to tags using the category to tag converter.
After you insert the name of your blog where the capital letters are now copy it into your upper browser bar and click.

Hello timethief, I believe your last post STILL only converts categories to tags, not the opposite. Even the caption you pasted there says as much.
-
Yeah, I’m still not sure if it can do what I asked.
The blog is http://lastblogonearth.com. As you’ll see, for a newspaper’s blog it definitely needs a theme change.

@groksurf
I have converted Tags to Categories. I have converted Categories to Tags. These functions both exist and I have used them many times. Go into your own blog and prove this to yourself.> Posts > Categories
Note:
Deleting a category does not delete the posts in that category. Instead, posts that were only assigned to the deleted category are set to the category Blogging Tips.Categories can be selectively converted to tags using the category to tag converter.
http://THENAMEOFTHEBLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/admin.php?import=wp-cat2tagClick the link and here’s what you find when the page opens>
Button 1 titled – Categories to Tags … Button 2 titled – Tags to Categories
Click Button 2 – http://THENAMEOFTHEBLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/admin.php?import=wp-cat2tag&step=3
and when the page opens this is what you see:
Convert Tags (___) to Categories.
Here you can selectively convert existing tags to categories. To get started, check the tags you wish to be converted, then click the Convert button.
The newly created categories will still be associated with the same posts.
> Posts
> Post Tags
http://THENAMEOFTHEBLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=post_tagOn this page you can Add or Delete Tags.

@davemaass
I’m all in and all done with this thread. Yes, you can convert Tags to Categories. I have copied and pasted what to do from my own blog above to accomplish that. -
Thanks, that’s one solution I’ll run by the powers that be.
Anyone else: I’m still looking for a solution where we can still use tags, but have them appear at the bottom of the post in this particular template.
