Vigilance theme – 2 Home buttons…??

  • Unknown's avatar

Just spent two days going through themes for my site, decided on Vigilance even though it displays 2 “Home” buttons. None of the other themes do. I can’t for the life of me figure this out. In pages, there’s only one “home” but when on the site itself, you can click on both “homes” to get there. Anyone have a clue?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The site linked to your username is a blogspot blog. We need a link to the site you are talking about.

Assuming you are talking about this site, http://sharlalovelace.com/ , the reason you have 2 home tabs is because you are using a static front page for your site, but this can be remedied.

Create a custom menu and then add only one “home” page to it. You may have to click the “view all” button in the pages module on the custom menu page to see it. Using a custom menu gives you a lot more flexibility and far more options such as custom links and dropdown menus if you need them.

I have been in the same spot with my new site, except the auto HOME page was linked to one of my other pages (Ads). I kept thinking it had something to do with the parent option but that was set to None.
In an attempt to solve it, I thought I could delete the Ads page and re-make it, but that made it words. Now the HOME page (which I did not create and do not want) says 404: Page not Found.
How can I fix it or just start over from scratch. I have just started and that would be fine if I could.
All I want for my static pages are About, Ads, Branding, Collateral, etc. down the row.
I don’t speak any code, so even your answer to the above question had me lost.
    Please help. lengasdesign.wordpress.com

@lengasdesign, you have no posts which is why your main front page shows a 404 error. There is nothing for wordpress to display.

Since you are apparently not going to use posts, but only pages, you have to create a static front page for your site. You can name it home, or welcome, or anything you like.

Next do as I explained above about the custom menu and include in that custom menu only the pages that you want to show in the menu.

@thesacredpath, I did the menu as you said, but it changed nothing. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to do something with it after creation…I’m not savvy on this stuff. but nothing changed. I can take the static page off but then it won’t do posts just on the blog page. Frustrating…

Go back to the menu page and in the “theme location” module at upper left, select your menu from the “primary location” pulldown and then click save.

Yay! I have no idea why that worked, but it did. thanks!!
