Vigilance Theme Help

  • Unknown's avatar

    Is there any way that in the Vigilance Theme I can make it so my blog header stays the exact same size and is not stretched out to fill the entire heading space? It shows it like that when I preview how my blog would look if I changed the theme but I am not sure how to make it stay that way. Thanks!

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    If you activate the theme, it does not do that. The header, and the entire theme are fixed width.

    okay thanks. that kinda stinks lol but thanks.

    One thing to remember is that each theme has a different sized header. Vigilance is wider than most at 900px x 180px. Most likely you would have to redo any existing header image since I think this is the widest theme here at wordpress.COM by a bit. Digg and Fjords04 are also around 900, but most others range from 500 to around 750.

    The blog width does not automatically shrink or grow based on the width of your header image.

    I have a vigilance problem, too. I go to VIGILANCE OPTIONS and I’m trying to customize the backrounds. But I don’t have a list os colors or patterns to choose from. Any help?

    is there anyway to remove the ‘home’ and ‘about me’ links under the header with this theme?

    @umphulump55, Search for “hex color chart” on one of the search engines such as Google and you will get a number of hits.

    @shalai6, Only if you have the CSS upgrade and some CSS editing experience. Your choice otherwise is to pick a different theme that does not have top navigation.

    I’m having trouble getting the theme to actually change colors. I can’t even find the hex colors that Vigilance has as defaults. I’ve gotta be missing something. Can anyone help me?

    @ mountpleasantyouth, Within your dashboard select appearance and Vigilance options.. There you will find a Color Scheme section where you enter the hex number of the color you want. Remember to enable the display of your custom colors.

    In ‘Vigilance Options’, I have turned on the Alert box and typed some text forthe Title and Message boxes as well. However, the Alert box does not appear in any Post/Page. Should I do anything more to display the Alert box?

    When using a text widget, is there a way to increase the text size?

    @dsjccg: Yes there is. But do you have a wp.COM blog? The site linked to your nick is not a wp.com blog.

    <div style="font-size:120%;">
    TEXT_HERE
    </div>

    If you want padding, you can add this between the semicolon and the closing quotation mark:
    padding:14px;
    If you want to change the line spacing, you can also add this:
    line-height:1.2;
    Of course the numbers are examples – you can change them.

    Thank you.

    Can you explain how to edit the CSS file for this theme? I understand how to work with CSS, but I don’t know where to access the Vigilance CSS file.

    Thanks again for your help!

    Sorry, I don’t know anything about CSS customization; you’ll have to wait for another volunteer – probably thesacredpath, who’s one of the best on this.

    @ dsjccg

    There is an “Edit CSS” option in your Dashboard under Appearance. You enter your css code there. To save your css, you must have paid the $15 upgrade. –jim

    @ jjava

    That’s it to see the alert box. It shows on your Home Page. –jim

    WordPress does not provide the CSS for this theme when you click the “view original stylesheet”. Vigilance is set up to use “child themes” instead of having the original CSS “edited” and I think that is the reason there is no link to it.

    You can use a search engine to search for “vigilance wordpress theme” and then download the .ORG version of the theme. In the “CSS” folder you will find a “master.CSS” file. You can use that as a guide, but PLEASE pay attention to my following warnings:

    WARNINGS!!!

    The wordpress.COM stylesheet for Vigilance is very likely DIFFERENT than the master.CSS stylesheet that you will download. I’m not sure if wordpress.COM created a supplemental stylesheet for the additions and changes needed here or whether they modified the master.CSS stylesheet, so do remember that this is likely going to be a real “trial and error” project.

    With Vigilance, ALWAYS set things so that your changes are “added to existing styleheet” and ONLY INCLUDE the parts of the stylesheet you are actually modifying. DO NOT paste the entire stylesheet into the CSS edit box. Use the original CSS as a GUIDE and write your own changes from scratch is my suggestion.

    Suggestion:

    If you use Firefox then I suggest downloading the Firebug addon and working with it a little so that you can try out changes in the CSS without effecting your blog. Firebug allows you to make realtime changes and see the results right in your browser and also quickly identifies where in the CSS page elements are controlled.

    Actually, I just found the URL of the wordpress.COM master.CSS file: http://s3.wordpress.com/wp-content/themes/pub/vigilance/css/master.css?20090324 .

    Click on that link and then copy out the CSS and paste it into a plain text file.
