VIP Blogs?

Just wonder about the VIP hosting thing. Does it cost anything to be VIP? or do i just need to have those 500k views / month on my blog.

My blog is getting a little more than 10.000 views / day and now and feel like having some ads on my blog but more important thing is to activate javascript without moving my blog to a .org server and to be a VIP member is the only way right?

First, you need to apply. Having 500K+ hits and/or the money doesn’t guarantee acceptance into the program. And yes, it costs hundreds:

I never understood why it costs so much for VIP. You can get a host with WP installed (and access to install your own plug-ins) for really cheap, a lot cheaper than VIP hosting. I’d wish that they’d come out with a middle tier option for hosting that’s more inline with what you can get from other hosts.

As I understand it, the VIP program offers all the uptime and maintenance-free and worry-free aspects of a .com blog. Simply being self-hosted (one of my blogs is) means when something goes wrong, it’s the blogger’s problem. When there’s downtime, too bad.

The VIP upgrade seems to allow you virtually anything you can dream up. Anything you can code, anything you can imagine, anything you break, WP.com will take care of it. I have a blog that might reach that potential, and I’m definitely weighing the peace of mind vs the $200 per month. If I can make $1000 per month off it, this might be a good decision, given the constraints my current computer system has (for instance, I can’t back ANYTHING up). If I can make $10,000 per month off it, you’d better believe this is a good decision.

Oh, and Valleywag did an analysis of ad revenue, and they said the current average earnings are 18 cents per thousand views. So, a blog getting 10,000 hits a day would earn $1.80.

  • Unknown's avatar

Is my math right on that? I haven’t had any coffee today. The eighteen cents thing IS right though.

  • Unknown's avatar

    $0.18 for 1,000 page views
    $1.80 for 10,000 page views
    $54.00 for (30 days * $1.80) page views

    based on my math

I assume that the 18 cents is the monthly earnings, right? (Seems a bit high to me, though)

  • Unknown's avatar

I saw that piece too and your math is right. As I recall, Valleywag said it was for the higher paying ads. I took that not to mean the oft-coveted adsense.

$1.80 per 10,000 page views=don’t quit the day job.

  • Unknown's avatar

    $0.18 for 1,000 page views
    $1.80 for 10,000 page views
    $54.00 for (30 days * 10,000 page views)
    $200.88 for (30 days * 37,200 page views)

To break even for $200/month for VIP hosting you need an average of 37,200 page views per day. That doesn’t count those with AdBlock or any ad blocking software, you’ll need 37k page views that will actually see the ads.

again, just based on my math, nothing official or anything, and I’m not a math expert :)

  • 500k page views is just a hint – if you’re not in that league, you’re looking at the wrong product. VIP hosting is mainly used by media companies and very large blogs that would otherwise have to maintain multiple dedicated servers and technical staff. A few hundred a month is a bargain for what you get.

For medium sized blogs, it’s not economical or necessary – go for WP on shared hosting or a dedicated server.

@tellyworth, any chance WP will start offering more economical hosting for the minor leaguers?

  • Unknown's avatar

WP.org does keep a list of hosts they recommend. It’s over there somewhere.

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh yes, the Valleywag article specified it wasn’t talking about Adsense but ads placed via blog ad companies. Adsense pays less, how much less I don’t know.

  • @jamesewelch, a middle tier hosting option is on our list but not at the top. There are other things to be done first, and decisions yet to be made. We’re aware of the demand for such a service and I’ll be putting some more time towards it once our current projects are finished and stable.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @tellyworth, thanks for the update.

I’ve seen the list of other hosts and have a friend that uses another host for her WP implementation, but I haven’t gotten to the point of needing a host yet, but it would be nice if WP offered an option.

Never do math when you don’t read the question :( Your math is right, rain.

Thanks! I feel superior now! Also: lucky…which leads to…

…so when WP.com beta or even alpha tests that new medium-tier service, I humbly volunteer my new blog, http://lolebrity.wordpress.com. I’m far too lazy to investigate choices on my own.
