VIP blogs and upgrades

    If you get VIP blog status, do you automatically get the upgrades as well, or do you still have to buy them?

  • Unknown's avatar

    i should think the upgrades are automatic, being charged $250 a month!

  • Unknown's avatar

    That’s what I thought as well, but I’d like to know for sure. I’m tired of reporting for advertising blogs that turn out to be VIPs. If I could tell by their upgrades whether or not they were VIPs, it would save time and hassle. Actually, there should be a list, you’d think.

    or maybe the vip blogs should insert a button that says they are.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’d think it would be pretty clear any WP.com blog with ads on it would be a VIP one. I mean any other blog has the code auto striped put of it.

  • Unknown's avatar

    i just saw one blog putting a ppp image.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Apart from getting tied into the tagging system, I think VIP blogs pretty much get the sort of setup they would if they were paying for hosting anywhere else. I do agree, though, that there should be more transparency about which blogs are which.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Do report all PPP please!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Oh drop me an email and I’ll yell at them in the PPP forums. :)

    A quick way to check for vip status is take a look at where their css is coming from. They usually mention a vip subdirectory.

    tiamatsdisciple, I find blogs with ads all the time, just not Adsense ads. Some have obvious upgrades, some don’t, but the mere presence of ads doesn’t mean it’s a VIP blog; most blogs with ads aren’t, they’re just ToS violating blogs, knowingly or not.

    Dr Mike, where exactly does one look for that information? I hit View Source and I get what looks like War and Peace in hexadecimal…is there a specific spot I should be looking?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Look to see where the CSS file for the theme is coming from. It’s usually within teh first ten lines with the meta stuff.

    We should all just become VIPs and see what we get. I wonder if they get the good BBQ at the meetup. ;)

  • Unknown's avatar

    hear that folks drmike is paying for everyone to get the upgrades to VIP status!!!

    *snort* I’m sitting here eating free doughnuts and coffee in the student union and talking to some incoming freshman’s parents.

    Shhhhh……

    The powered ones are pretty good.

    @drmike
    I ask the same question rain did above:

    Dr Mike, where exactly does one look for that information? I hit View Source and I get what looks like War and Peace in hexadecimal… is there a specific spot I should be looking?

    See up a couple posts.

    I’ll post an example shortly. I should move over to the library.

    Right after:

    <meta name="generator" content="WordPress.com" />

    There should be a ‘link’ tag, something like these:

    <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://s-ssl.wordpress.com/wp-content/themes/pub/freshy/style.css?m=1741693332i" type="text/css" media="screen" title="Freshy"/>

    So, what drmike is saying, is that if someone has VIP status, somewhere in the CSS path there should be a vip subdirectory… something like this:

    <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://s-ssl.wordpress.com/wp-content/themes/vip/freshy/style.css" type="text/css" media="screen" title="Freshy"/>

  • Unknown's avatar

    Pretty much. Here’s the lolcat example:

    <link rel="stylesheet" href="https://s-ssl.wordpress.com/wp-content/themes/vip/icanhascheezburger/style.css?1" type="text/css" media="screen" />

    I also note that they have their own favicon in there as well and that’s a /vip/ link as well.

    @devblog and drmike
    Thanks – gottcha.

    Ah, thanks. You get free coffee and powdered donuts, eh? Wow, you Americans and your coddling by a government who simply wants to keep you stuffed with carbs and complascent…Ever wonder what that powder IS, Dr Mike? Hmmm? T’aint food.

    You get free coffee and powdered donuts, eh?

    Um, no. I don’t know anything about any coffee and doughtnuts. ;)
