Virus through Flash Player on my wordpress site

Hello. A visitor to my blog said that her computer was infected with a virus when she was asked to update her flash player. can you please assist?

  • Hi there,

I’m afraid this isn’t something we can help with.

Flash Player is a piece of software made by Adobe. It’s infamous for being insecure, though, which is why it’s not widely in use any more, and I can’t think why she would have been prompted to update that when visiting your site, as none of our features require Flash as far as I know.

That said, simply updating Flash also shouldn’t infect a computer with any viruses or malware. So if I had to guess, that visitor saw a prompt to update Flash that was itself generated by malware already on their computer (malicious browser add-ons, themes and toolbars can do this), which them took them to a download link for something that wasn’t actually the official Flash Player software made by Adobe.

I’d recommend that visitor download and install Malwarebytes and run a malware scan on their computer, and also do a complete scan using Windows Defender if they’re on Windows, or a reputable antivirus program like Avira Antivirus if they’re on a Mac.

If they’re not able to remove the virus using software like that, they’ll need to take their computer to a computer store that have people who specialise in removing this type of thing.

It is extremely unlikely that anything on your WordPress.com site caused this to happen, though – we don’t use anything that requires Flash, as I said above, and every WordPress.com site is continually being scanned for malware to ensure there’s nothing on your site that can infect a visitor’s browser or device.
