Visitor number accuracy?

  • Unknown's avatar

My visitor numbers are no longer showing up accurately. Could I do something to fix this? I have seen this happening in the past, but then WordPress always fixed it on its own within a day. For instance, my count of referrers for yesterday’s activity was 393 and the visitors wordpress shows is 310. Today there have been at least 83 referrerals to my site, but I only see 62 visitors in the stats. Up to this point my visitor numbers were always referrals + extra. Anyone know what’s going on?

I have the same issue. The visitor number in stats dropped significantly but views haven’t (even increased a bit actually).

I didn’t change anything on my blog so there is no reason to have much higher rate of views per visitor than ever before.

    See here please https://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/#referrers

Additional information re: stats, likes, comments and follows

Our stats are not real time stats and take time to update. There are frequent fluctuations that most do not notice because we aren’t watching the process. For details see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/ and here https://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/#views-and-visitors and note the views and viewers take hours to update.

Our stats are page view stats. But please do not assume that everyone who clicks a follow, like, share, reblog or comment link actually reads the post on your blog because odds are they may not.

Follow, like, share, reblog or comment clicks are not page views. In fact, follows, likes, shares, comments and reblogs are completely misleading when you are talking about page view stats.

Your followers and anyone with a WordPress.com/Gravatar account who is logged into WordPress.com can “follow” your blog, “like”, “share” and “reblog” your posts and “comment” in several locations such as the Reader, without ever clicking into your blog and creating a single page view stat. Subscribers control how frequently they receive your posts (instantly, daily, weekly) and can comment without clicking into the blog.

Logged in visitors using a mobile can read the full post without creating a page view stat. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wordpresscom-reader-show-full-text?replies=31#post-1373606

You can control the length of the entry sent out on your RSS feed here Dashboard > Settings > Reading. Choose the “summary” setting for your RSS feed rather than to “full text”. That will compel followers who are not using mobiles to click into the blog to read the full post which will create a page view stat.

Thank you for that information. In my case this hasn’t been a matter of hours. The discrepancy has been going on for almost 48 hours. That is more than usual, which is why I thought ask, because the last time something like this happened it was a WordPress glitch. Especially since all of my other stats (views, referrers, etc.) show nothing out of the ordinary I find it strange that I would suddenly have such a big dip in purely visitor numbers, while the rest remains steady.

    You’re welcome. :)

  • Hi folks, are the discrepancies apparent after 48 hours? If not, I would give it time and see if they sort themselves out. Between timezones and caching, it can take some time for those numbers to finalize.

If they do remain after 48 hours, can you get screenshots and upload them to your media library? Thanks in advance!

It’s been over 48 hours and I got a screenshot of my stats and I uploaded it to my media library (it’s the last picture in there). All remains the same (number of views, number of referred views), only the number of unique visitors is lagging behind. What I did notice is an increased amount of engagement in the past few weeks. I am receiving more likes, comments and follows lately. The only explanation I can think of is either people are reading my site via other ways (readers, feeds, subscriptions, etc) or they may be recurring visitors which means they are coming back to my site. Perhaps someone

Indiequeen84, I too am experiencing the same issue as you. Over the last 48 hours and a bit more, my visitors numbers have been around half as usual, while page views are pretty much consistent, including views for particular posts.

    My blog is mabelkwong.com.

Thanks timethief and supernovia for the information. It could be something to do with timezones or perhaps the back end of things at WordPress updating themselves. I’ve had this issue in the past and it was resolved in about a day or two, if I remember correctly.

    Hopefully this gets resolved soon.

    Hi everyone,
Been having the same issues since last Thursday (10th December) with my visitor stats not updating accurately – they’re simply not consistent with other daily statistics including page views by country; and referrals. Any leads on whether WordPress has noted the problem/ is there any resolution in the works?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m still having the same problem as well, but so far, no one seems to know what’s going on. I have added the modlook tag again in this thread. Hopefully someone can have another look.

  • Okay, so the main issue is that the visitor count is not what you’d expect?

Do bear in mind, people who “like” or comment on a post from the reader will not register as a visit/visitor unless they read the whole post from the reader.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to respond again. I understand that this could be because of visitor retention rates going up. However, my stats showed a lower retention rate in recent months (from 1.5 to 1.38). And then suddenly, one day to the next, my visitor numbers go down from 400 – 500 unique views a day to no more than 300 and a retention rate of 1.80 – 2.10 from one day to the next. All other numbers, from views to referred views are stable and behaving the same way as all the other days.

That is why I don’t believe that I suddenly have fewer visitors who stay longer and click more. Especially since other people are claiming they are experiencing the same problem, even starting on the same day (last Thursday) and saying that this is an issue they have had before, I don’t think it’s us getting fewer visitors, but something going wrong on WordPress’ end.

If you want to have a look, I uploaded two more screenshots from today with the chart and one with the views & referred views to my media library. Also, I would very much appreciate it, if you could tell me where I might find more contact information on receiving tech support beyond the forums and the live chat (which I have also used, but to no avail).

Thank you so much again in advance.

  • Thanks @indiequeen84 , that helps.

@themabelkwong — can you pinpoint when this started for you?

  • Unknown's avatar

This started for me on Thursday as well, and I’m experiencing the same situation as indiequeen84. I am currently getting a ratio rate of 1.8-2.0 over the last few days, whereas prior to Thursday it’s around 1.1-1.5. Page views have been generally consistent overall, but the fewer number of visitors has been puzzling.

Here is a screenshot of my stats over the last couple of weeks.

Thank you all for your help.

It has been 5 days now (since Thursday, December 10) and I am still experiencing the same issue.

I am aware of all the reasons why views and visitors can be in discrepancy but that after 4 years of blogging suddenly now hundreds of my visitors would change their behavior and keep it that way consistently for 5 days is unlikely.

@supernovia I have uploaded the screen shot to my media library of the lovingkorean.com

  • Thank you to those of you who have provided screenshots or links. That’s helpful. I’m showing this and some other data to our teams here and will let you know what we find.

I am experiencing the exact same problems as described above. A post I wrote was shared on Facebook by a page and has received 800 visits today. More than 700 referrers came from Facebook today, over hundred from search engines and as well a few from Twitter. However, the Visitor stats are saying I had 601 visitors, which seems strange to me, as this is not in line with the statistics I have seen over the past few months when an article was shared by a popular fb page and this is going on for days now. To be clear, the views seem correct, the visitors don’t. I have posted a screenshot of the stats in my library. Thanks for the help!
