Visitor stats: Hong Kong/China

I used to have visits & views from HK – which was expected. I haven’t had any for a while but now have views from China – which I wouldn’t have expected.

Are HK views/visits now rolled up into China, or should they still be shown separately? Thanks!

  • Hi there,

The map visualization we use for our stats is constructed with a third-party charting tool, Google’s Geochart. This tool is described in detail here: https://developers.google.com/chart/interactive/docs/gallery/geochart

I suspect it is the case that Google is including stats from Hong Kong in with China based on this post I found online, given that technically Hong Kong a “Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China” and not a sovereign nation.

I am not sure about when they made this change, but the Geochart API documentation offers no method of affecting territory borders, so we have no way on our end to restore Hong Kong visits in our stats.

Please note that while our Stats are using Geochart, WordPress.com or Automattic does not take a position on territorial disputes in China or elsewhere. Hope this helps!

That makes sense. Much appreciated, thank you.
