Visual – An eye-opening WordPress.com theme
-
I have recently changed to Visual and am having a problem with the sub- menus. I cannot see them. I think it’s the parent-child component. I have a number of pages that I would like to put under one of my menu headings.
To be specific, how do I put “The Border Crossing” under “Stories”?
Thank you in anticipation.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi @johnbrennanlive!
You can add submenus from My Site > Menus.
Click on the + next to Stories
Choose Add to children
Select Page
Select The Border CrossingThen click OK and Save :)
-
Thank you for that Chad.
I added “The Border Crossing” plus a few others, however, they DO NOT DISPLAY on the screen. They appear in a list and only appear on the screen when you select from the list.
Is it possible to include a step so that when I select “Stories” all the stories appear, just like all the posts appear when you select “Posts”?
-
Is it possible to replicate the demo page?
On the demo page you see a number of images together with an excerpt.
Is it possible display that layout when I select “Stories”? -
When you select “Stories” images would appear.
When you click on an image it would direct you to a permalink of that particular story.Currently, I have 3.
Even though each has a featured image, for some reason it does not display.
Any suggestions.

Hi there, What you are seeing in the theme’s showcase page are blog posts with their featured images, like on the demo site https://visualdemo.wordpress.com/
Your “Stories” are static pages and child pages and not posts. You might want to read the difference between Posts and Pages https://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
You could change your site layout to take advantage of category pages. When you write a new story, rather than write it on a page, write it as a blog post and add the “Story” category. Then you can use the Custom Menu to display that category page by itself, like the “Featured” category on the demo site https://visualdemo.wordpress.com/category/featured/
Here’s more on category pages https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/

Hi Jennifer,
Thank you for your reply.
Previously I used the Motif theme.
When I would click on “Stories” a number of Featured Images would display in GRID fashion. All one had to do was to click on one of the Featured Images and that particular story would open.
Can I not do that in the Visual theme?
-
If you compare the Motif theme and the Visual theme descriptions, you’ll see that only Motif has a grid page template. Visual does not.

https://wordpress.com/themes/visual/
my 2¢/ If you wish to use Visual, you might be able to do what you want with portfolios, but that is more difficult (IMO) to set up than category
pages and is less friendly to search engines.
/my 2¢ -
Thanks Jennifer.
Now I don’t know what theme to choose.
I swapped to visual because it looked grid pattern to me.
But, as you say, it is only for posts.Motif has grid pattern for pages.
Your 2 cents worth was definitely worth the read, but as you say, less friendly to search engines.
I just don’t know which way to go.
I certainly love grid pattern for pages. -
Again my 2¢, if search engine discoverability is important to you, I’d go with blog posts and category pages.
Pages are for relatively static content like contact information, business hours, location or about you or your site. I assume that you are going to continue publishing more stories from time to time. You might want to consider why you feel they need to be published as pages rather than as blog posts. Perhaps that will help you decide.

Sometimes I re-read a story and make subtle changes.
Rather than post it, I page it.
Some stories are incomplete and I can always add when I page it.So the bottom line is that I definitely want to page my stories.
I like the idea of a Carousel style Gallery for my photographs but am not sure if every theme has this option.
I like the idea of Grid Pattern for my stories and am not sure how many themes accommodate this for pages.
I would dearly love another 2 cents worth from you. Can category pages be grid patterned?
-

If you use the Gallery feature as described on this page, by default the images will appear in the Image Carousel. This isn’t theme dependent.

That is something Staff can answer, so I’ve tagged this again for their attention.
Can category pages be grid patterned?
I’ll take an educated guess and say generally if the front page has a grid display for posts then the category page will also display this way because it is using posts to populate that page. The caveat is I haven’t tested this.
That’s is all the time I have right now. Will check back much later.

Thanks so much Jennifer. I have reverted to motif theme for the time being and I will see how that goes.
As you reflected gallery slideshow carousel seems to be theme independent.
Once again, thank you.

Hi there,
I like the idea of Grid Pattern for my stories and am not sure how many themes accommodate this for pages.
We don’t have a list of themes that support the grid page template, no. We do have a list of themes that use a grid layout, but that includes grid posts, portfolios and pages:

Some stories are incomplete and I can always add when I page it.I get what you’re saying here, but you can always edit posts after the fact as well. Keep in mind that when you publish pages, your followers have no way of knowing it. Pages don’t have an RSS feed, so there is no way to follow content published on pages. Posts are both better for SEO, and can be followed, meaning followers on your site can be notified of new ones. They can also be shared automatically to social media, unlike pages.
It’s up to you, of course. Perhaps these things don’t matter to you. But I thought I’d mention it.

Hi Kokkieh,
Thank you kindly for the grid-layout themes. I will take a look at these that knowing that they include grid posts, portfolios and pages. That is a good starting point for me.
I did not realise that you could change your posts once submitted. Thank you for that.

I will take all of that onboard. Once again thank you.
