Visual editor

I came back to do some more edits on one of my sites, and all of the sudden, the contents are squished and narrow in the visual editor. I checked the preview at the squishiness doesn’t affect the site itself. But it’s hard for me to work when the content is squished and not at the same scale as the site itself.

  • Hi there,

Can you tell us the URL of the site where you’re seeing this?

If possible, also take a screen shot of what you see (of the entire browser, please, so including the address bar), and upload it to the site’s media library. Then we’ll be able to see it there.

Hi, thank you for your quick response!

The URL of the site is mdwellerportfolio.wordpress.com

I have taken a screenshot of what I see in the editor, as well as what I see in the preview.

Before this glitch happened, the content was at normal width in the editor.

  • Ah yes, that’s intentional.

Your theme can adapt to numerous device widths, and when the editor bar on the right is present, that’s effectively changing the width and triggering on of those more adaptive looks.

If you you toggle that editor bar on the right on/off by clicking the gear icon near the top-right.

Um, I’ve toggled off the gear icon and the contents are still squished. In addition I have a wide width screen, with about four inches of white space on both sides of the content.

  • I see exactly what you mean. The editor and your live website are trying to do two different things with the information you are creating, and this is by design. I’ll explain below.

Your live website is going to try to scale the width of your pages to match the width of your browser, as well as anyone else visiting your site.

However, the editor for your site disables the width scaling in favor of allowing room for you, the editor, to easily find and use your editing tools and settings. This means it fixes the content within a defined width. The white space on either side should help you distinguish between the content you are working on and the editor tools.

This is where the Preview feature is important. As you make edits, be sure to click the preview link to see what those edits will look like on your site.

Let us know if you have any other questions about the editor and the preview function.

Well, what I am trying to get at is this:

The content in the editor WAS at the same width as the content in the preview. I went to update the site and look at the preview, and when I came back to the editor, the content suddenly became squished.

In short, between the time I entered preview mode, and the time I left preview mode, the editor decided to squish everything.

Also, I am not very satisfied with how loooooooooooong it takes for people to respond. This is really annoying since I am on a deadline to complete this site.

  • Hi there,

Can you please share a couple of screenshots of this issue so I can better understand what’s going on as I’m not able to replicate it on my end?

You can use https://snipboard.io/ to quickly grab and share screenshots.

@Staff: I reported this issue directly to support a couple of days ago and was directed to this https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/53399

  • The content in the editor WAS at the same width as the content in the preview. I went to update the site and look at the preview, and when I came back to the editor, the content suddenly became squished.

It looks like this happened because you grouped some blocks together. Grouping blocks change how they behave in the editor.

Edit your page, and click on the cover block at the top. Then press the Up-arrow on your keyboard. In the sidebar on the right you’ll see the name of the block you’re currently focused on. Continue pressing up until it says you’re looking at a Group block.

In the toolbar appearing right above the block, click the three dots, and select the option saying Ungroup. Now you content should be full-width in the editor again, as it is on your site.

i am having the same problem and nothing on my page is grouped

  • Thanks @justjennifer. Judging by the time stamps, @kokkieh was likely typing while when you posted that.

    @maxlatte
could you let us know which site and which page or post are affected so we can take a look to confirm?
