Visual Editor does not match published formatting
-
I just wrote a fairly lengthy blog post in which I used the numbered list to create a list of items. In that list, however, I’ve used Shift-Enter to create new paragraphs within the list items.
It looks great in the Visual Editor, but when I publish, the formatting is all messed up. Lines are indented when they shouldn’t be, the new paragraphs are now merged to create one very long one, etc.
Why is this and how do I fix it without having to manually go throughout the entire HTML (which would completely negate the use of a visual editor)?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

My blog is at http://notyourservant.wordpress.com/ You’ll see that everything is basically one very long paragraph. But in the visual editor, I have blank lines between each list item and often within the item itself.
-
Are you talking about the “10 Rules for Dining Out” post? If so, I see nothing out of the ordinary with the formatting. Ordered and unordered lists, by HTML definition, do not have a blank line between them.
-
So I just looked through the HTML of the sections that are screwed up, and there aren’t even any HTML codes at those points.
For example, there’s a point in the HTML where this is: “to cover taxes.Your tips are”
Now, when it’s published, the finished page looks like this:
to cover taxes.
Your tips are
What is that all about??

Things out of the ordinary are that other than the list itself, I never chose to have anything indented or double-spaced. But there are points all over the post that are indented even further than the numbered points would be.
-
@reformer, this is what I see on that post: http://allhatnocattle.wordpress.com/files/2009/05/servant-screen-cap.png .
On this line, “…to cover taxes.Your tips are…” you need a space between “taxes.” and “Your.”
-
I wish wordpress would show all the code in HTML view. For those of us familiar with it, it would make things a lot easier, but for whatever reason, they do not.

You actually have more places where there are no spaces between sentences. You need to edit the post and put those in.
-
Hmm… I see this: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=vqsj2e&s=5
And this is what the Visual Editor shows (and how I want it): http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=205qfed&s=5

“bring home each day.So, how much should you tip?”
“in your tip. Also keep in mind”
“from management.Being rude to your server”
“earning your tip.This isn’t a big deal”
“full priced meal.Consider this example:”
“losses for your server! It was because of this”
“fool while you yack on and on.Along these lines, when” -
I understand that’s what it’s like when it’s published. But all those places are where I have a new line in the visual editor. For some reason it removes that line and mashes the sentences together like that when I publish it.

What browser are you using? I’ve viewing it in Firefox 3.0.10 and also in Safari 3.2.1 and in both of those it looks just fine.
Also remember that the theme you are using is flexible width so the text is going to wrap differently depending on the width of your browser window.
-
First off, go to settings > writing and select “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and click “save changes.”
Then open the post and correct the space between sentences issues I’ve identified above and click “update post” and then take another look at things. I was able to get the #1 to mess up by making my browser window in Safari very narrow and then widening it again. I think it is the space between sentences issue.
-
I just copied 1 and 2 out and put it into my test blog with the theme you are using, added the spaces between sentences and the problem does not occur.
-
Now I’m seeing “p” tags around this part of #1
Your tips are the money that your server uses to survive. It is the only money they have to bring home each day.So, how much should you tip? What are the general rules? The general rule is 15% of the total bill for average service. If your server did a good job, 20% is the norm. However, if your server actually does a terrible job, you are well within your rights to let it show in your tip. Also keep in mind that even though you’re tipping your server, they likely don’t get to keep it all. Most restaurants require their servers to give a portion of their tips to the bussers, bartenders, hostesses, and/or food runners.

Put your cursor at the beginning of “Your” hit delete and then if necessary put a space in between the period of the previous sentence and “Your.”
-
Hmm… I’ve tried it in both Firefox 3 and Internet Explorer with the same issue. I tried checking the XHTML setting and it does the same thing, regardless of the width of my browser.
I’m at a complete loss why it looks messed up to me but not you. I also had another friend look at it and it’s messed up for her too. Maybe Windows is having issues with it (I assume you’re using a Mac)?
-
Heh… this is exactly why I gave up on WordPress the last time I had a blog… it couldn’t properly format bulleted and numbered lists for me :-/.
Every time I make edits, though, the formatting in the published version changes. It isn’t always messed up in the same way so it appears random.
