Visual editor doesn’t function

After some time away from my website I’ve been trying to update it recently. The website preview still shows the pages as I had them set up, however, when I try to edit those pages in the visual editor I only see a blank page. It happens with my Home page and one other page.
I’ve tried changing my theme, clearing my browser cookies and cache (Chrome), using a different browser (Firefox and Safari) and even using another device to no avail.
I can edit text with the code editor, but I much prefer using the visual editor for other things like widgets.

Which site is this for? I see you have a few on your account. The homepage on both sites are an issue to edit? Or is it only one of your sites you have this problem with?It happens with my Home page and one other page.
What is the title of the other page? Can you take a screenshot of what you see when you try to edit either of those pages? please include the web address bar in your screenshot as that can sometimes be a clue for us as well.

The issue affects both my sites, rsatranslation and esrsatranslation, and the Homepage and Testimonials pages are affected. Here are the screenshots of what the preview shows:

The most recent revisions were some text added in the code editor.
No, nothing changes in the visual editor with that either. I’ve also tried loading previous autosaves of the page but nothing happens when I select one.
When I updated the page in December 2020 I had no problems with the visual editor. The only thing that’s changed between then and now is Jetpack, could that have anything to do with it?

I don’t believe so since both sites are hosted on WordPress.com – what are you seeing to believe it may be Jetpack related?

No it’s just a guess since it’s the only thing I’ve noticed that’s new since December 😄 I have no clue as to what could be causing the issue

Oh, okay 😄 I am guessing this change occurred when editors were updated. I am seeing with both pages that the cover block was added. Did you add those yourself recently, or were they added before you started having issues with the pages?

The only things I’ve added to the problematic pages since December is a little bit of text, which I did through the code editor. The cover block seems to have appeared on its own (though it doesn’t show up in the preview)

I’ve not seen this before, but I can see it on your editor when I view it. Can you tell us more about what you added via the code editor, and how?

Yeah so while in Edit page, I clicked options and then code editor. I only added text, I didn’t change or add any code. I just added ‘& Catalan’ where I wanted it in the paragraph:

Ahh; can you let us know why you edited in the code editor? And if you go back to the revision before that, does it work?

Yeah I added it in the code editor because the visual editor wasn’t working at all. When I updated the site last in December I used the visual editor. But when I logged in a few days ago to update it again, the visual editor wasn’t working from the get go. Loading revisions doesn’t seem to change anything.

Let’s do a small test. If you copy the page’s text (from the published page, not from the editor) and paste it to a newly created test page – does it work as expected, or does it look funky again?
I think the easiest way to fix this might be to copy the text from the published page, remove all the content from the editor, and paste the plain text. But let’s make a test with a new page first.

So it seems to have copied across all of the text okay, but instead of buttons I have hyperlinks. Those are easy enough to add back in! I’ll add my formatting the way I have it on the main page and then the codes for both pages can be compared to see what might have been causing the problem in the first place!

Okay so on the homepage it seems that there was some crazy formatting code that was messing things, hopefully it posts here with no problem.

Everything seems to be working now that I’ve taken out the extra jetpack code, thanks everyone for your help!

Thank you for reporting this! I’d taken a copy and I think we figured out the issue, so I’m filing a bug report now.
