Visual Editor not displaying [Gallery] Images

  • Unknown's avatar

When editing pages with Galleries of images, the Galleries dont appear in the VISUAL editor, but are clearly there when you look at the preview, published page or html editor.

Its not when you upload or view a single image, thats ok. Its when looking at galleries or multiple galleries on any one page. It just appears blank, where the gallery should be in between all the text.

This problem has existed for many weeks and is not just on my computer, but on others too.

Im using Safari, although the problem is replicated in Chrome and Firefox too.

Is there any update when WordPress is going to resolve this?

  • Hi –

Thanks for sharing all of this information with us. I wanted to mention that the business plan on your account gives you access to priority live chat support 7 days per week – that will be the quickest way to get help. Get started at https://wordpress.com/help/contact/

Of course, we are happy to help you here in the free public support forums. Being asynchronous it will take a bit longer though.

Are the galleries completely gone? Is there an outline where they should be? Broken image icons? Go ahead and add a screen shot to your media library and we can take a look at what you are seeing. Thanks!

The galleries on the Visual editor page are completely missing. No outline, nothing at all. But they are there in the HTML editor and in the preview and published page. I’ve only recently upgraded again, so will contact live chat support. Its been like this for some time though.

    Howdy,

Thanks for the details regarding the gallery outlines being missing. I’d like to try to replicate this, are you using the WP-Admin interface or the newer WordPress.com one? When you get a minute could you also upload a screenshot to your media library or an external file sharing service?

Since you were able to replicate the issue in multiple browsers that may rule out browser extensions/add-ons but just in case, do you run any extensions in all browsers?

Hi – Thanks for replying. Im using the newer one. If i revert to the older original editing page, i can see the galleries clearly in the visual editor. The problem exists only with the new Visual Editor.

I don’t think i have any other extensions enabled in any of the browsers.

Hi, i can confirm definitely 100% no extensions being run in the browser.

  • Unknown's avatar

Im using OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5 , Macbook Pro, Retina 13″ Early 2015.

Deleted all cookies, cache, restarted but still doing it. No image gallery in the Visual Editor.

  • Hi there,

It looks like we missed your previous replies. Sorry about that.

I can see the issue if I look at a post containing a gallery on your site. However, I’m not able to replicate the issue when I add a gallery to a different Business Plan site like yours. This tells me it’s something specific to your site causing this.

Please try disabling all custom plugins you installed and see if that causes anything to change. If it does, re-enable them one at a time, checking the editor inbetween, to narrow down which one is causing the issue.

Let us know if that doesn’t deliver any results.

Hi , thanks for your reply. I don’t have many plugins, but followed your advice and disabled them.

Even with all them deactivated, there problem persists, I cannot see the galleries in visual editor. I re-enabled the plugins again one by one testing editor in between reactivation and still not able to see the galleries.

I noticed when i right click and drag the blank area the gallery is supposed to be in, the popup opens for editing/deleting the gallery, despite no gallery showing on the editor. I can remove or add to the gallery that way. It is frustrating not being able to see it though.

Testing another one of my wordpress.com sites , one with a free plan and no plugins, there was no problem, so I’m now positive its not my computer or browser and is limited to that one blog (which happens to be my main site)

    Any advice?

Interestingly, doing further testing, i noticed, when i change the layout of the galleries to ‘Individual Images’, ‘Thumbnail Grid’ or ‘Slideshow’ its working ok.

However, when the Layout setting is changed to ‘Tiled Mosaics’, ‘Square Tiles’ , ‘Circles’ or ‘Tiled Columns’ is doesn’t show the gallery in the Visual Editor.

Hope this helps track down a solution.

  • Thanks for that, that does help. I’m checking a few other things right now, but have you noticed whether this happens on any other sites?

  • Also, it’s a bit of a random grasp, but does it help if you enable the tiled galleries option here?
    https://blantyreproject.com/wp-admin/options-media.php

And, for troubleshooting, would you mind temporarily disabling the YoutuWP plugin then allowing support to take a look?

I noticed it also has masonry style galleries and I’m wondering if that’s conflicting. You can contact us sooner in chat if you’d like, too.

Hi, enabling the tiled galleries option did not fix it.

The YoutuWP plugin is now deactivated.

The problem is not happening on any of my other WordPress sites (although this is the only site I’ve paid for a premium plan). The other sites i have are free and ok.

My preference for all galleries on the site is the inbuilt “Tiled Mosaics” option and was working until i upgraded the plan a few weeks ago.

Feel free to have a look, but please don’t delete any content or links. It would be useful if you could provide advance notification and I’ll make sure im logged out. Thanks.

  • Thanks for trying all that.

After some digging I found that we have had other reports of this, happening on sites both using and not using plugins. So it appears this might indeed be a bug on our end, but only affecting some sites.

I’ve added your case to the report, but beyond that I’m afraid there’s not much else we can do until our developers find the cause and fix it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you. I will work around it meantime then using the old editor.

I look forward to the developers fixing it. As a premium business user, having paid for this service, I would expect stated functionality to be working at all times.

I trust it will be given some priority.

  • paulveverka –

Absolutely! We appreciate you getting in touch about this. @kokkieh has added your report the thread on https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/issues/20441 and you can follow along there if you like.

Hi, is there any update on this? The above thread was closed this week saying engineers are focusing on Gutenberg and that it “would be resolved”.

However, its still FAR from resolved. Is SO annoying having to guess if the images are actually there or not on my pages and posts. NOT what i was expecting at all upgrading to a premium business plan.

    Can somebody please advise? Thanks.

    Hi there,

If you haven’t heard, Gutenberg is the new editor coming to WordPress and will replace the editor you are currently using which has the bug you’ve described.

While I know it can be frustrating when things don’t work as expected we have decided to not fix this issue in the current editor and instead make sure the next version of the editor doesn’t have this problem.

I know that’s likely not what you want to hear, but when the new editor is available for testing we plan to post an update to https://horizonfeedback.wordpress.com so stay tuned to learn more about the new editor coming to WordPress.com.
