Visual editor: What does the "paste as text" button do?

I continue to be frustrated with the user-hostile revision of the visual editor’s copy-and-paste performance: stripping out ALL formatting, thus requiring the user to painfully put back the typical required formatting (italics, boldface, lists, blockquotes, links, and so on). The way the editor formerly worked was great, but for some reason that had to be changed to the “strip all formatting” mode.

I find that everything is posted as plain text, so what does the “paste as text” button do? Whether I paste with the button on or off, all formatting is stripped and only the text is pasted. (Paragraphs are preserved, so that’s something.)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)
