Visual theme display problem with categories
-
I just switched over the Visual Theme, and am a fairly new WordPress user. I have a couple things that I can’t get to work correctly and I’ve been through the forums. I should note that I’m running the free version, so I recognize there are some limitations. I appreciate your help!
1. I have my primary menu set to load categories. This works great and I’ve used in my other blog theme. But for some reason there is an empty rectangle on the top of the stories. It looks like it should host text, but I can’t figure out how to add text.
2. When I go to the “customize” menu, I changed the color to white and I really like how it looks with my header box in white. I click “save” and it looks all white and nice. But when I go back to my blog the header box is black again. Any way to change this?
3. I’m guessing this is not something I can change with the free version, but can I add a “subscribe” widget on my homepage with the free version? Or am I better off creating a tab for that?
Thanks!

Welcome to WordPress! I’ll answer your questions separately.
But for some reason there is an empty rectangle on the top of the stories.
Ah – I see what you mean. Looks like those rectangles contain the category title. It’s set to white so it’s very hard to see right now against your light blue background colour.
If you select the text within the box with your cursor you can see it. For example, “Category Archives: nature” is on this page:
http://changingcurrents.wordpress.com/category/nature/
It looks like this may be a glitch somewhere in the theme, as that text should actually be grey, which is how it appears in the Customizer:
I’ll report this to our developers so they can take a look.

What specifically are you trying to change to white? You can change the background colour without an upgrade – which I see you’ve already done. You can also change the header text colour here:
https://changingcurrents.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=custom-headerMore extensive colour customizations require Custom Design:

Let me know if you have any questions about this.

Since the theme’s sidebar widget area doesn’t appear on the homepage, you could try adding the subscription shortcode to a page or post and then link to it from a menu item, as you suggest. I think that would be a good workaround.
Just let me know if you have any questions about how to do that.

Hi there – I know it’s been a while since you posted, but I just wanted to let you know that if you’d like the white category titles to be more visible on your category pages, you’ll need to choose a darker background colour. The theme is designed to have white text on a dark background in that spot on the page. Darkening up the blue should do the trick. Just let me know if you need any help with it!
