Voting and alert drop down not working

Greetings. I have a pair of problems that started at the same time, so I am assuming they are somehow related.

I use the opera browser and still use the old stats page.

First, when I click on the bell in the upper right corner to look at alerts (likes, comments etc.) the outline of the menu appears but nothing ever loads. I have found that if I go to the current “my site” page, I can drop down the alert menu there and view what has come in.

Second, when reading other blogs, if I “like” something, a popup window will briefly appear and then disappear. It will then state that I have voted but my little avatar will not appear with the others that have voted unless I reload the page.

I have not noticed anything else amiss but these both started right at the same time, so I assume there is something else going on beneath the surface.

    Any help is much appreciated!

  • Hi, this does sound like a possible browser issue. Do you have the same issue in another browser? If so, let us know and don’t worry about the other ideas here. But if it does work in another browser, let’s troubleshoot Opera:

    – Is your version of Opera current? If not, are you able to update?

    – Have you tried clearing offline data to see if that helps?

    – Do you have any extensions installed that could be gumming things up a bit? If so could you temporarily disable those to see if that makes a difference?

Let us know and we’ll go from there.

    Thanks for replying.

I tried it on chrome and everything works OK.

So, I updated opera and cleared data. I then restarted my computer but the problem persists. What do you suggest next?

    Thanks!

  • Just so we’re on the same page here, which version of Opera are you running now?

    I’m using 72.0.3815.320

This is a known issue with Opera. Our developers are investigating, but for now we don’t have a solution, and in Opera notifications will only work in the blue My Sites admin bar. We suspect it’s related to Opera not allowing third party cookies.

Are you speaking of the Like button?

Does this only happen on sites that have a custom domain, like your site, http://hikemtshasta.com/? Or does it also happen on sites on a free example.wordpress.com domain?

If it only happens on custom domain sites, it also points to third party cookies, i.e. then it’s likely the same issue that’s causing notifications not to work, especially as the two issues started at the same time, probably when your Opera version updated to 71.
