waiting for blog import

  • Unknown's avatar

We started an import of our blog on 8/31. The message on the import page says to contact support if it has been longer than 24 hours.

The media appears to have been imported, which seems to me the more complicated part of the process, but the blog posts don’t appear at all.

Please advise on how we can fix this.

    Hi there,

Sorry for the trouble! The importer got stuck during your import — I reset your site’s importer so you can try that import again.

I noticed that your import file included a number of posts that look like they are from the Flamingo plugin. The special post types from that plugin won’t be imported, so if you can you may want to try creating an export file from your original site without those posts included. That will make the file a bit smaller and easier to import.

If you have any more trouble with that import, please let me know!

    Thanks Rachel. We appreciate it.

I just exported the current posts only (removing the flamingo and other posts). The file is significantly smaller.

As for the re-import, i just went in and deleted the images that came over in the first import, so that it is as clean an import as possible.

If I hadn’t deleted them, what would have happened?
Would we get duplicate images or would it know not to somehow?

More importantly, the media library now gives me a message that we are close to our limit (message below).

Does deleting count towards the limit?
If we try the import again, will it still import all the relevant images?

    MESSAGE:
Looks like you have used 16,777,216.0 TB of your 3.0 GB upload limit (572,662,306,133%). Since you are close to your limit, you might want to consider purchasing a WordPress.com Premium plan.

    Thanks

    Hi Tony,

The importer watches out for duplicates, so it won’t re-import the same content if it is already on your site.

Sorry for the confusion about your media library — sometimes if you delete everything from the media library it gets a little confused about how much available space you have. I just fixed that so your site is showing the correct amount of available space.

    Thanks again, Rachel.

We have begun the re-import. Hopefully, this one will take.

    Thanks

    Rachel.

I realize the import takes time, so it will perhaps change, but when I go in there now, it appears to have imported actual posts (which it did NOT do before) but not imported any images (which it DID do before). Is it still working on the images? or has it failed again?

    thanks

My blog is not appearing on Facebook..it’s been more than a half hour. It usually is no problem. Thanks. I tried to fix it, but I don’t understand how to help it. margueriteblogs.com

    Thank you

    Hi Marguerite.

I’m not sure if your question is in the right place. I’m new to these forums, so I could be wrong, but I think you’d get a higher chance for an answer if your question was the introduction of a new topic, rather than an addition to a different one. If I knew how to help you I would, but I’m only here because I need help as well. Good Luck…

Rachel, any thoughts on why the images have not been imported to the blog or how to get them in there?

    Hi Tony,

The new file you imported was just the posts, without the media, so those media files weren’t imported this time around. Please don’t make any changes for now — I’ve asked my team to take a look at your site to see if we can fix that up for you. I’ll let you know as soon as I have an update!

  • Unknown's avatar

Ah. The first time I exported from the original, I exported everything, but the second time, I only exported the posts, based on your recommendation to try to remove the flamingo items. I thought the media items would still be included, but obviously not. I know you don’t program those elements of WP, but I fee like those pages could be more descriptive in what is going on. And so it goes.

I will await your instructions on what to do next. If you guys can get the media moved over, that would be awesome. Thanks for all your help.

    thanks

    Hi Tony,

I’m sorry my instructions ended you up in this spot — the WordPress exporter and importer can both be a bit tricky and finicky. That said, I’m hopeful that we can get this fixed up for you. :) I should have an update later today or tomorrow about it.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Thanks, Rachel.

No apologies necessary. Your instructions have helped us get closer to where we want to be. We will wait patiently for more info from you.

Is there a way to export only ‘posts’ AND relevant media (is there a setting or checkbox somewhere that I am not aware of)?

    thanks

    Hi Tony,

Our team is in the process of importing that media for you, so you’ll start seeing that media appear in your site’s media library. It’ll take a bit of time for that process to finish, due to the number of images being imported, so I’ll let you know once it’s done. :)

Is there a way to export only ‘posts’ AND relevant media (is there a setting or checkbox somewhere that I am not aware of)?

In theory you should be able to export posts only (without doing anything differently) and when you import the posts the media will be imported along with them, but sometimes that just doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to. In those cases (when you’re importing into a WordPress.com site) our team can fix up any issues with that import.

Thank you Rachel. This is great news. I realize it will take some time, but this is much better than manually moving them all.

Right now, the posts still ‘show’ the media within them, but they are really just referencing the original URL. Once the media has been uploaded to wordpress.com, will the posts change so that they include the wordpress.com image URLs?

    thanks
    .tony

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Tony,

Ok, it’s all done! All of the references to your original site within the posts were updated, so those posts are showing the images from your WordPress.com site’s media library now.

In the process, we did notice broken images in some of your draft posts. Those were images from a different WordPress site, and the images aren’t available any longer so we couldn’t get those for you. Since they’re older drafts I’m not sure if you need those images, but I wanted to mention the posts in case you want to go back and fix them. Here are the titles:

    • laura slater
    • villa mecklin
    • bicentennial civic center
    • erebid moth
    • recipe: thyme mac and cheese
    • journey to the center of the earth
    • the lost thing
    • munjoy placemat
    • beulah rug
    • ninna rug

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

Rachel, you guys have been great. This has been my first real experience with wordpress.com (i am used to the wordpress.org side of things), and I have been very happy with your response time and helpfulness. Thank you.

Thank you for the info on the above posts as well. I will have to talk with the original author to make sure we have that info.

    Thanks
