Want a blog name that is taken but not used
-
Hi,
I’m starting a blog on wordpress and I know exactly what to call it. Problem? The name is apparently taken, but when I google search it, nothing comes up.
I think maybe the name is registered, but not in use. Is it possible to contact wordpress and somehow transfer the name to me, or to request that the previous person drop it?
Thanks for any help. :)

No I’m sorry but that’s not going to be possible. There is no requirement that a person who creates a free blog must use it. Also the username registration information is “private” information that WordPress.com Staff will not, of course, release.
The only way you have of acquiring and unused blog is to contact the user who owns that blog in question, using any contact information they provided on the blog. or by leaving a comment for them requesting a blog transfer. Provided you do make contact and the blog owner is agreeable a blog transfer can then be made. See > http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account

I have the same problem as rianrhoe, except that the blog (with the name I want to use) has been deleted, so I have no way of getting in contact with the owner(s). If I go to the blog address a WP info page comes up saying:
The authors have deleted this blog. The content is no longer available.
I think that in a case like this WP should give a contact option so dead blogs don’t use up viable names for all eternity. If there is a method for me to contact the owner(s) of this blog, then please let me know, because I can’t see a way.

@jlgalache There’s probably no way to contact the owner, but what would it accomplish anyway? The blog name is gone forever. Annoying, I’ll grant you, but nothing we can do about it.
Anyway, owners of defunct blogs wouldn’t be too happy to have their contact details made public – it would be improper to do so.

I kept coming up with possible names one after the other and found all were taken and 90% were not being used. Almost all still had the original post set up by WordPress, no content and from 2008 and earlier. Sort of a shame WordPress can’t wipe all the details and release the name for re-use but I understand why. But it’s still a waste of good names!
Blogs that are old and have had no content added are very much wasted for no good reason. -
Ron, I’m not asking for contact details to be made public, but for a contact form that I can use to send a message to the blog owner. There would be no need for me to know any information about them.
5acrefarmer, this blog never even existed. I searched for old cached posts, using Google and the wayback machine, and as far as I can tell nothing was ever published.
I think there should be a use-it-or-lose-it policy for blog names. If after 12 months a blog isn’t running, delete it and return the name to the available pool. I’m not talking about deleting blogs that ran for a few months or years and then were closed, but blogs that have 1-2 posts and haven’t been updated for years.
Anyway, I’ve had to end up going with my 4th option name because the first 3 were all taken but not used.
