  Question: if we already have a website, but want to do a completely new one, to be hosted somewhere other than current hosting, can we go ahead and build the new one and then activate it when complete? Does current hosting group need to be notified or can we just inform them when we have the new website ready to unveil?

  Hi,

  When you say current hosting, who do you mean? Is it your current WordPress.com site? Or is it another host?

  I have a feeling that you are looking for help with a self hosted WordPress site, please confirm so that we can help you.

  we are not currently using wordpress but thought this might be a good route to go since we have decided to complete revamp our website

  You have two options with WordPress. WordPress.com and the self-hosted version, WordPress.org. I would recommend that you go here and evaluate the options: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  My main question is whether we can proceed with building a new website, utilizing wordpress, and then when we are ready to launch, just notify the company that is currently hosting the non-wordpress website that we are no longer doing business with them? Does that company need to be notified for any reason that we are moving ahead with a new website, same domain name …?

  Hi

  That’s a little difficult for me to answer because I do not know the nature of your agreement with your current hosting provider.

  I can tell you this: If you want to, you can create a WordPress.com website and build your site there. If you don’t want to make it public right away, you can keep it private until you build it up.

  Since you want to use a domain that you already own, you will need to map that domain to your WordPress.com site. Here’s how you can do it: https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/ You will need your domain provider’s help at this point.

  As @thamarakandabada mentioned, you can create a WordPress.com site and mark it as private until you are ready:

  https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

  We don’t currently support incoming domain transfers — if you already own a domain and would like to use it here on WordPress.com, you will need to ‘map’ it to your site:

  https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/

  just notify the company that is currently hosting the non-wordpress website that we are no longer doing business with them?

  I’m not able to give any advice on your current hosting providers policy, however I would recommend speaking them about your options.
