I just wanted to thank Tom, because I indeed did get the username back that I wanted, after I did exactly what he suggested. It took a while, but WordPress staff have fixed it for me: I emailed the support team as he told me to. I also should point out that the comments following Tom’s were nasty and unproductive and seem like an attempt at cyber-bullying. Please REFRAIN from that sort of thing in the future. It’s also spammy to post comments such as those that timethief and justjennifer did, which are totally unrelated to the topic in question, and those should be removed by the technical team. Since I am subscribed to the topic/question I posted, I don’t want such messages hitting my inbox. I will be reporting them as spam.
Note the disclaimer (from WP) below, under the comment box: “We love positive and productive discussions, so please keep comments on the topics at hand and not on other members of the community. Thanks!”

I would love to talk to this Tom, because in fact the official policy is that deleted usernames are never returned. If Tom would like to handle all these cases in future, I’m happy to tag them both “modlook” and “Tom” and probably additionally “it’s time to update the damn support docs then, isn’t it?”
Don’t tell people who are simply trying to accurately answer your questions to shut up. The next time you need help they WILL, and you’ll be stuck with nobody answering your questions at all.

Raincoaster: I wasn’t asking anyone “who was simply trying to accurately answer my questions to shut up”. Please read my message (and the entire thread above) again to clarify what the problem is. What I did ask was for certain users to refrain from posting irrelevant and rude responses to my questions which can be seen as an attempt at bullying and spamming.
“Tom” is only another user trying to help other users, so your wanting to talk to him about WordPress policies is something you can handle on your own. Deleted usernames ARE in fact returned to the rightful owners in question (and nobody else) if you can verify your identity with your registered email address.
