Want my domain back, just not for WordPress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello, I recently registered the domain handsomefoxmedia.com and then cancelled it in order to switch to Blue Host. Was wondering how long it would take for the domain to become available again, and if not, is there a way to reverse this?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi there,

    Since your domains was purchased and immediately cancelled it has already been sent back to the domain registry. They usually release domains within a couple of days. We don’t have any automated way to reverse the cancellation, our only method of doing so will take about that long as well (and has no guarantee of being successful). I can try however if you would like me to.

    Let me know!

    I guess I could always wait the couple days… but the Registrar isn’t going to hold onto if for a year or something? I thought I read in another topic that was the case… Or is it just because I purchased it and cancelled it so quickly?

    Thanks amightywp!

    The Registrar is not in any way, shape or form compelled to release the URL for resale. The Registar may choose to do whatever they want with the domain URL. That includes holding onto to it for 80 or even 90 days prior to release for resale, and also includes auctioning it off to a domain name squatter if they so choose.

    @timethief, that is a mix of a few different items. The registrar/registry may choose to hold on to a domain until its original expiration date in cases like credit card chargebacks or cancelations long after the initial 48 hour period has passed, but that is very rare. In almost all cases the registrar releases the domain within a few days.

    The 80 to 90 day period is the domain expiration process which occurs when a domain is not renewed at the end of its 1 year purchase. After the first 50 or so days, it can be sold to another individual via backorder or auction.

    @handsomefoxmedia, the short version is that yes, it should get released here in the next day or two because it was purchased and cancelled so quickly. If it isn’t, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do!

    @amichtywp

    Great, thanks so much! Will definitely keep you posted. I’m hoping they just release it in the next couple days, but fingers crossed.
