Want same size thumbnails from different sized images

    I have a ton of older photos that are the weird sizes from the 1980s and earlier. I want to put them into galleries alongside new HD photos.

    All I am trying to do, is for the gallery thumbnails make all the images the same size (usually square works for me, but whatever). I don’t need the whole photo in the thumbnails, just that the thumbnails are the same size.

    Is this something that can be done without plugins and without editing my actual photos? I don’t want to remove parts of photos just to fit in thumbnails together.

    Oh, and the reason I don’t used the mosiac tiles or square tiles is because I don’t want them to have to hover over the image to see the title of the photo.
