Want secure connection when logging into my site

My connection is not secure when I log in to my site. How please, do I make it so?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I don’t need help with my blog, I need help with secure logging into my website

  • We use HTTPS exclusively here, and https://jansarahblog.wordpress.com/ is operating properly and secure.

Were you referring to a different site?

Hi, I think I’ve got it figured out…I am waiting for a certificate to secure my website, not my blog…when I log in. thanks…does that sound correct?

more info: via DreamHost I just requested a SSL/TLS Certificate for my WordPress website, which is under construction…when I go to it and want to log in to the control panel to work on it, it’s an unsecured login…

I am going to get a consult from a friend of mine who is a WP pro, but I don’t understand how I got a blog, but I am working on building a webpage…embarrassing

  • Ok, so that would be regarding a self-hosted WordPress.org site, which we really can’t help with here.

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/ (that’s why I asked for the URL of the site you were referring to)

With that said, once you have an SSL certificate from your hosting provider, follow this guide: https://make.wordpress.org/support/user-manual/web-publishing/https-for-wordpress/

WordPress.org has complete documentation for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress.org at https://wordpress.org/support/ and support at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

If your site hosted in wordpress.org, and you need to install secure features, such as SSL certificate, maybe you can install simple SSL or others similar plugin that compatible with SSL. For login secure, for example to avoid hacking site, you can also instal the “limited login attempt plugin”.

  • @wpresspro WordPress.org doesn’t offer hosting. WordPress.org is site-building software that you host with a hosting provider.

Thank you macmanx. I am now thoroughly confused after reading this:

“WordPress.com is different. Here at WordPress.com, you don’t have to download software, pay for hosting, or manage a web server. You can instead focus on creating wonderful content, and let us handle the rest!”

So, I purchased a year long subscription with DreamHost, selected a domain and got an automatic download of WordPress_dot_? .org or .com?
::sigh:: I am doing fine with it, but is the link to understanding all this telling me I didn’t need to select a domain and pay for a host?

I don’t want to blog, perse, I wanted to post my graphic design work for perspective employers and post artwork and photography.

I appreciate your time….there are more replies to read…

    Hi jansarahf,

You might think of WordPress.com and WordPress.org as Walmart and The Walmart Foundation. One is a commercial entity for making money, and one is a charitable org for helping a community of people. But both are pretty much run by the same people and have similar-sounding names. Most people who are new to WordPress get this confused at first (I did) so don’t feel badly!

WordPress.org can be thought of as free, open-source software that anyone can install on their own server or rented server space such as DreamHost, GoDaddy, etc. You can pay for the server at DreamHost and they will install WP for you.

WordPress.COM is a commercial service which combines the WordPress software, hosting, and other services. (I’m sure there might be a better way of explaining it, sorry for my clumsy comparison!)

There is a free plan at WordPress.com, but it only offers 3GB of storage. If you reduce the file size of your images, that might be enough for a small portfolio site, but I am not sure what is best for you. See if there is a portfolio theme you can use under the free plan. Please learn more and try out the free plan here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/ (you can shrink your images using TinyPNG.com or similar services)

If you find that the free plan is enough for you right now, please check with DreamHost for a prorated refund on hosting. Contact them for the most accurate information.

If you want to keep your domain name (imaginaryword.com) and have it point to your WordPress.com page, you cannot use the free plan. You have to pay for either Personal, Premium or Business plan. (information about Domain Mapping here)

    Best wishes to you!

  • My favorite analogy is a recipe versus a restaurant, if it helps. One is free “instructions” for your computer (that’s all code is really) and the other is a service.

    Our service comes with SSL.

The free software doesn’t have SSL, but your service provider (your host) may be able to help you. Good luck!
