Want to add photo on left with two columns on right

  I’m just starting. Cannot even figure how to edit a theme.
  I have a photo I want on the left, with text and archives on right.
  Any direction or guidance? From square one.

  We cannot edit the underlying PHP script theme files here at wordpress.COM because this is a multi-user platform which means we all share the same underlying theme and wordpress files. Any change by one person would change it for everyone using that theme.

  If you have CSS editing experience, wordpress does have the paid custom CSS upgrade, which will allow you to stylize the theme, but it does not allow you to change the functionality. Note also that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM. Also, there is no official support for the CSS upgrade, and few here in the forums with much CSS experience, so you should figure that you are on your own.

  What you are wanting to do takes a good knowledge of CSS and not all themes are going to take kindly to doing this because of the way the markup and CSS are done. The most wide open theme here is toolbox, which is basically a blank slate (CSS wise) that you can do a lot of very interesting things with since it supports a lot of CSS3 and HTML5 stuff.

  Try using a different theme. And yes most of the time custom CSS is required. However, you can GREATLY influence / cheat / mislead (call it want you want) every single theme by clever use of html, images some photoshopping and widgets.
