Want to change Blog URL to non-existant site, but says it's taken

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I would like to change my blog URL to goalsetter.wordpress.com. When I go to do that, it says the name is reserved. However, if you try to go to a site by that name, you hit a ‘site does not exist’ landing page.

I tried getting around this by purchasing URL forwarding from the supposed existing goalsetter.wordpress.com, but during the validation of the purchase it said the page didn’t exist.

Is there any way to know if it is reserved by mistake, know who currently owns the URL so I could discuss purchasing it from them, or is there any other way to make sure that users end up on my page when they type in goalsetter.wordpress.com?

    Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

When I go to do that, it says the name is reserved.

When we register a username account the matching blog is reserved for our future use. It cannot be obtained by anyone other than the person who has registered the matching username account.

If and only if you have registered the matching username account log out, clear your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and cookies https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies. Then log in under the correct username account and as the blog is reserved for you and you will register it after logging in under the correct username account.

However, if you changed your username then the blog URL will not be available for use under the new username account.

Well your can see my username is “tjloch” or are we talking about something different? Please post relevant and helpful responses working toward a solution.

If someone has a username but is not using it, it should be made available. What is the reasoning behind automatically reserving URLs that may or may not be used?

I don’t understand why wordpress would prevent other users from using a site if the person sharing the username doesn’t want it. Moreover, URLs are a commodity, if the person with the username used a different URL they would have to pay to take advantage of this URL that has been reserved for them if they wanted an additional URL, so why can’t I pay for it?

There are unnecessary barriers here. Could you please better explain them and provide alternative solutions?

This is the relevant profile ie. username account https://en.forums.wordpress.com/profile/goalsetter

If you regitered nthat username account too, then you can login you can login under that account and register the matching URL.

    Is that clear enough?

Sorry about the weird typos. I’m using a borrowed bilingual keyboard that has issues and should be trashed.

It is clear enough, but that is not me. It doesn’t even appear to be an active user.

What is WordPress’ policy on inactive users?

Do you have any other ideas?

Staff cannot violate the privacy policy and provide the email address of the party that registered the wordpress.COM goalsetter username account.

However, nothing is preventing you from registering a custom domain URL https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/ and domain mapping from any underlying .wordpress.com URL to it http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-subdomain/

I tried that and it would not allow me to map to goalsetter.wordpress.com. It said I wasn’t allowed to map to wordpress.com sub mappings.

What is WordPress’ policy on inactive users?

It is assumed that ianctive accounts will become active one day and the relevant URLs will be available. You ought to read this as well https://en.support.wordpress.com/deleting-accounts/ please.

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. All wordpress.com blogs are on .wordpress.com subdomains. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the WordPress.COM blog, and as you own a domain URL already, you can see here for mapping an existing domain. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

It is clear, though, that I do not own that domain and I would need to own the domain to make the necessary DNS changes. Wouldn’t I both need to own the URL and be able to make DNS changes? Why would I be allowed to map a custom URL to this reserved URL, but not just use the custom URL? That doesn’t make sense to me.

I appreciate you trying to help.

You cannot register this URL https://goalsetter.wordpress.com because only this username account can register it https://en.forums.wordpress.com/profile/goalsetter

You can regsiter any available .wordpress.COM URL and purchase a domain and map to that domain URL. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL.

I apologize for not being more clear from the get go.

I need this particular URL and it is not in use so I should be able to get it or at least use it through a redirect of some kind.

It does not make sense from a business perspective for WordPress to be unwilling to sell me the URL. It also doesn’t make sense to reserve URLs for users when we get to choose our URL upon signing up for an account. Each of us had the opportunity to claim the URL with our username if we wanted it. Goalsetter did not want theirs, so why reserve it for them? Especially when WordPress could be making a lot of money selling the URLs.

I get that you cannot share goalsetter’s user info, but there should be some way to get permission from the user to part with the domain.
