Want to convert page to post so I can include tags

  • Unknown's avatar

My front page presently displays one of my pages. I would like to convert this page to a post. I would still want it displayed as my front page, however; the difference being, I could then add tags to it, after it becomes a post. Is there a way to convert a page into a post, short of completely rebuilding it?

  • Hi there,

Pages cannot be converted into posts, and vice versa.

The only way to do this is to copy the contents of the page (preferably from the HTML view to make sure you keep all your formatting), and then pasting it into a new post (also in the HTML view).

A single post also cannot be set as the site’s front page. To show that post on the front page you’ll have to set Latest Posts as the front page option, and then you can make that post sticky so it always shows at the top, but your other posts will appear below it.

Why is it important for you to add tags to this? WordPress.com tags are only used for the internal organisation of content on a site. Pages are organised via a site menu instead, which is why they generally don’t get tagged.

What about meta keywords for SEO? Are those worth adding? I thought that was what the tags were.

  • Hi there,

To add meta keywords on WordPress.com sites you’ll need the SEO tools upgrade which is present in the Business plan. You can read more about that here:

    Additional SEO Tools

However, all WordPress.com sites very search friendly by default and we automatically send notifications to Google and other search engines with every post and page update that you make. You can read more on that here:

“WordPress.com tags are only used for the internal organisation of content on a site.” As a note to anyone who might ever read this, Google does pick up the tags. When I was last searching for my site, the only hit was a link based on a tag!

  • Google indexes tag pages on your site same as any other page.

But WordPress.com tags are not the same thing as meta-tags in the site header that tell Google what key words to index your site under. So WordPress.com tags don’t do anything to improve your overall SEO. It’s just another type of content that gets indexed.
