want to customize widget areas and also what is in them

  I am confused about the sizing of the widgets and their areas. The bottom widget area seems to be divided into columns so that when I try to put a widget that has a lot of text, it shows up in a very narrow column. Is there a way to play with that widget area? Also, I want to make the About Me widget smaller and I would like to have it appear in a different font than the text of the blog posts on the home page.
