want to hide pages and make them just links

I’d like to know if i create pages and just want to make them clickable from an image, how do I keep them from appearing at the top of my blog? I tried to set it as ‘unpublished so the links would not show, but when the image that links to the page is clicked, the page displays as 404 not found. So how can I do this without revealing the page links at the top? I have no way of chaging it unless I can acess the css, correct? And if i have that, I can delete that option that way? Thank you in advance for any help!

Isn’t the ability to show pages just another widget? Go to Design, Widget, Edit, and Remove.

alexis – we need a link to your blog in order to look at it. The one in your username is not a wordpress.com blog.

rchs – some themes have tabs at the top for the pages, not just the pages widget.

I made a page called “Site Map” and put all my pages I did not want to show on the main navigation bar under that. (I am using Press Row template)
Although the page is called Site Map, I did change the URL to /1/ so that those pages would have a simple URL. mysite.wordpress.com./1/name of page. Then I just linked them up to the sidebar.
You can do this with your images also if you add the HTML box to the sidebar.

However, I do have a question about the Google Verifying page.
In the instructions — it states to create the page and add the given code to the page, then the given URL to use.
It looks like the page would have to be a main page with the url: site.wordpress.com/code.html so how do you make the page invisible and not on the menu bar? Or can I put it in my /1/ subfile?

    Thank you very much.

    Verifying with Google:
Once your site is verified, you can set the page to be private. Check your Google Webmaster Tools regularly and whenever Google reports an error, make the page visible again, re-verify and make it private once again.

Thank you very much, that certainly is helpful advice!

    About pages in page tabs:
If you set a page to be a child of another page it will not appear in the page tabs, e.g. setting the Site Map as parent for other pages. Child pages will still appear in the Pages widget, indented below their parent. If you want to make pages invisible form the Pages widget, too, you must enter the page id that you want to exclude in the Pages widget.

wpvstp, I am using the studiopress theme. I tried your trick but my static pages are still showing as tabs even if I declare them as child pages to other pages. It’s at http://www.endlesswait.com. I don’t want to show the “weekly poll archive page” but I need to have that page for the WP-POLLS poll archive to work.

    Anything I am missing here?

    @srini
My instructions were for a wordpress.com blog. Your blog is not a wordpress.com blog, and thus may or may not work. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/7-things-to-know-before-posting-in-wordpresscom-forums?replies=1

you can also set the page to unpublished status also…
    after Google verifies your site…
