Want to host a website, more info required.

    Hi,

I need some help regarding the web site hosting. I run this blog kumarrobi.wordpress.com. I am good with all technical networking stuff and I want to earn some extra money by this blog. I know that I can not post ads in this blog as this is a free one. But I want to know what should be the condition to post an ad. How much it costs to run an exclusive site where I can post some ads incurring of all charges. Also with such kind of blog full of technical stuff, how much can I earn counting the fact that internet is full of such information. What I can do differently from internet can present best practices followed in industry.

I am expecting some experienced person who is hosting a website to answer this. It will be really appreciated if you can answer in small range in terms of money. I hope someone can evaluate the blog and can provide me a small range of expenses and income using his/her experience.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Figuring all costs (domain name and hosting) figure an average cost of between $10 and $25 per month generally, depending on bandwidth and storage requirements. Go with a good hosting company such as the ones that are listed over at http://wordpress.ORG/hosting/ . Do not go for any of the really cheap or free hosting companies. You get what you pay for.

With all the web design I’ve done, don’t expect to make much until your hits get over 5k per month, and even at that point generally you are only going to cover your costs. The average blogger will make about $100 per year in advertising, but that is somewhat dependent on your audience. Some demographics are much more likely to click on ads than others.

Also you have to consider that more and more people are using add-ons such as adblock plus so that they don’t see ads when they visit sites. I’ve been using it for years, and anytime I see an ad that it misses, I just zap it and never see it again.

Just make sure if you do self-host, that you go easy on the ads. Too many and you will drive your visitors away. I’ve seen that happen time after time again.

Thanks sacredpath that was really informational.

What are the cost included in $10 to $25 for web site hosting? I know you need to pay for website hosting. Are there any other expenses you need to pay? I have so many questions :). I am pretty new to it.

Also if you can answer running a blog and advertising can get you some money. Are there any other means with which you can make money. Or advertising is the only way.

Also I have heard of some professional site makers who help you in building a site like SBI. What is the feedback about those? Are these things useful?

The $10 to $25 would include the domain registration fees (broken down by month) and the hosting fees. That would pretty much cover it unless you were planning on doing e-commerce, which would have additional costs.

It depends on what you are going to be doing, and the quality and demand for the information you are going to be providing. Some site, such as shadow government statistics charges $175 per year for a subscription to get their juicy tidbits. To make that sort of thing work though, you have to put out, and put out quality, original content that people are willing to buy.

Generally, advertising is what most people go with. You just have to try things out and see what happens. Just don’t count on buying a yacht and a mansion in Beverly Hills and you will be alright. Hopefully you can at least pay for the hosting and domain registration costs, and perhaps put a few bucks in your pocket to allow you to buy a couple designer coffees each month.

Bottom line: Don’t expect to get rich unless you can do something like techcrunch, all things D, or gizmodo. They make a decent income off advertising, but they are more the exception than the rule.

    Thanks for all the info.

    You are welcome.

As far as site builders, it is always caveat emptor (let the buyer beware). Some are good, some talk a good story but never deliver, and some are really amazing, and everything in between. If you can it is best to get references and a list of sites they have done, and also to get clear in your head exactly what you want, and then ask them to put it in writing. Go over it very carefully to make sure they are covering all the bases. I’ve seen many jobs go outside of the contracted scope and end up costing the client a mint because they were not clear on what they wanted, and/or the designer was not clear on what they wanted. A few I’ve seen end up being 5 times the cost of the original bid.

One last question, you get money when somebody clicks that ad or if somebody open your page you will get the money. I want to know how adsense works?

That question is something you will have to ask over at Google adsense. I’m sure they have a FAQ section with typical questions.
