There’s an ugly deal going on, behind closed doors: US Congress. If the Greedy Powerful Wealthy get what they want: having a free WP blog will be useless.

I don’t know community view, if objection to link/thread: then delete, but don’t complain when you don’t know what happened to Internet access. If thread stays up: post at least a mark so thread will stay on top for others to see. (Maybe there’s a better way to do this, I dunno, I’m too tired to search. –Change whatever, to suit community, but e-mail friends, watch tonight or on-line.)

Hmmm. We do pay to get the internet. It’s called a monthly cable/internet bill. Am I missing something??

Yes, you are missing. ON TOP of cable/ISP cost –seperate, they want to charge to use –base the toll fee on Speed. i.e. access WITH their ads: get fast speed, better rate; 2nd tier ads: very very slow access/speed, censor what you can see…. (–the deal isn’t done; there are several variations of what they’re trying pull; none are set –yet.)
I said it was tricky. Watch the doc, it will explain.

If “Net Neutrality” was WIDELY understood –by ALL bloggers, mothers, small business, students, grandparents, website owners –EVERYONE using the Internet, then Congress, White House, Justice Dept. and right-wingers on FCC would not even be discussing gutting our access.Americans have until Nov. 2 to send comment –but First they need to know/understand what’s going on.
I expected to see: WP Post this subject –as a sticky, in ALL Forums; surprised when it didn’t appear. Why isn’t it up?

WP doesn’t seem to comment on political matters, and whether or not this affects the Internet it is a political matter.
WP can, of course, simply move their servers to Ottawa or Vancouver or, for that matter, Mumbai and that’s the end of that problem for them as a company. I would expect that if this goes through quite a lot of companies will be doing that.
There’s quite a LOT of coverage of this issue; in fact, I’ve been driven off BoingBoing by the sheer number of DRM and Net Neutrality posts lately. It’s not a hidden issue.

How does ONE company moving servers off-shore: resolve a few mega-corporations’ power/ability to control OUR access to GET ON the Internet, search engines –small businesses –democracy to survive?You don’t seem to understand this issue: telephone companies want CONTROL to charge TWICE. Those who can’t afford to pay: WILL disappear. –MoveOn, NRA, artists, Christian Coalition, ACLU, museums, niche search engines, medical research papers, start-ups will all be frozen out.
FCC changed the rules: now no TV coverage of local issues;
changed the rules: one company owns 1,200 radio stations –by remote control, none cover regional news –no humans in them to warn of Katrina, etc.
Now: they want to change rules –do it to the Internet.Look at Nosy’s comments. She doesn’t see a problem, thinks I’m goofy for even posting… drmike thinks I’m self-promoting, podz views it as a one-person rant, you think it’s a political bore. LOTS of people didn’t see any reason to leave germany –in 1935; 2 1/2 years later there wasn’t any place to escape TO.
Discussion of the issue isn’t hidden, but EFFECT of it: is NOT understood.
–Perhaps you, every other blogger will get it if: WP HAS to move and so does everyone else who wants to continue using the Internet –and ‘off-shore’ suddenly costs triple –four times more –and maybe new free-speech/ content rules, WP –blogging ISN’T free any more? Will THAT be just “political”?

Poppy, I understand the issue quite well thank you. I do think you’re posting in the wrong place, but as long as you’re going to rant at me I’ll be giving it right back.
I know, as do many people, that offshoring happened in the first place because offshoring is cheap, often very much cheaper than paying American prices for things.
I don’t think that you understand that there are people here who are not subject to American law, and that WordPress, like all companies, has the right (and at this point the ability) to set up/rent servers in another country. The net effect of Net UnNeutrality will be to drive innovative Web companies to Canada, India, Ireland, the UK, etc. Bad for the US, but not actually the end of the Internet as we know it.

I was about to post that American Laws do not effect me at all but nosysnoop has already said it. This is not the place to talk politics. How about if I start a thread talking about the politics of my homeland? It just won’t make any sense. Offshoring, as nosysnoop pointed out, is a lot more cheaper and that’s why dozens of companies are already offshoring. This is a support forum and we should stick to that only!

–I haven’t seen languages on front page/time zones/blogs, etc?You “understand the issue quite well”? What makes anyone think: American mega-corps won’t move into markets in other countries and gain control of them? They could merely follow ENRON’s methods: they paid Indian government oficials, representatives and ‘advisors’ with influence, who each happened to “decide” it would be good for India to take the water in vast parts, build plants, re-sell it back to users. –Would have happened/just about to, when ENRON blew up. If US corps see significant business go off-shore: they will go after the money –wherever. i.e. MacDonald’s polluted Paris 2 1/2 decades ago; BestWestern Motels –in Asia, Middle East, etc.
What happens in the US: doesn’t STAY in the US, it gets crammed anywhere corp’s think they can make money. I have friends in England; Brits, mostly, resent the American stuff that ‘lands’ on them.
I am not “ranting at [you]” –your indifference/ passion is not an issue. If you/anyone in the US, a country that supposedly cares about democracy, not written to Senators, House or FCC –protested, then be prepared to live with results; pay or perish. Those outside of US, with “less” democracy, this fight IS coming to a city near you –eventually. What will any do about it –then?
