Want to make blog only available by link

I have the free version of WordPress.com. I would like to make my blog private so that no one can look at it without the link. I would like to be able to give the link to my blog to my friends so that they can access it without having to make a WordPress account. I’m fine using a password instead, but it needs to be for the whole site, not individual posts.
If this does not work with WordPress, please recommend another blog that has this feature.

Hi there,
One of the privacy settings hides your site from search engines. While that doesn’t make the site private exactly, it does mean that people shouldn’t just stumble upon it from Google.

The option I’m recommending is the second one–“discourage search engines from indexing this site”
Just to be clear, anyone who had the link to your blog will be able to see it, not just your friends. This option also does not require your visitors to have WordPress accounts.

Ok, and there’s nothing more secure? I want it to be where no one other than those to whom I give the link has access. The description under the option you are describing says that it only *discourages* search engines from finding the site.

I’m afraid there are no options between private and “discourages search engines”. That having been said, I really don’t expect you’ll have a problem with outsiders stumbling across your site via search engines. If the people with whom you share the link start sharing it with their friends and social networks, then your audience could get bigger than you intend but other than that situation I think you will be fine.

The only way to do that is to make the blog private, in which case your friends would need accounts here in order to view the blog.

I don’t know a lot about them, but I did a bit of research, and it looks like TypePad would allow you to set up a password for your whole site: http://help.typepad.com/password_protection.html
