Want to redirect my domain name to another location.
-
I purchased a domain name through wordpress and currently have this directed right to my blog on wordpress. (sosimplysusan.com)
I now want to change the routing of my domain name so that:
a) my blog name goes back to the original path (using .wordpress.com extension, and
b) my domain name redirects to a brand new location. Can you please tell me how to do this?
Thank you! SusanThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Susan, to point your domain name to another site:
a) go under Store > Domains, and select sosimplysusan.wordpress.com as the primary domain:
https://sosimplysusan.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
b) option 1- if you want sosimplysusan.com to point to a non-WordPress.com site, log into your domain manager and update the name servers to point to the ones provided by your new host.
option 2 – if you want sosimplysusan.com to point to a different WordPress.com site, please let me know the WordPress.com address and I can take care of it from this end if the site is on your sosimplysusan user account.
Just let me know if you need further help.

Hello, Kathryn!
Thank you for your response!
I tried option 1 above, but it would not allow me to add this new name:
NS3.www.sosimplysusan.etsy.comIs there something I am missing with this process?
Thank you so much!

Hi there, that doesn’t look like a real name server – could you let me know where that was provided to you?
Do you have a hosting package for your site or is it just an Etsy store?
-
Hmmm… not sure about how I’d get a “hosting package” through etsy. I have a standard etsy shop that I wanted to direct my domain name to. I have seen other people do that (using other domain hosts) so I was hoping there was a way here through wonderful WP. :)
If something else is needed, could you guide me at all as to what I’d need to ask etsy for in order to do this?
-
This is the other way I’ve seen my etsy shop address (but I didn’t think the backslash worked with redirecting the domain name):
-
Thanks for clarifying what you’re trying to do. I can think of two options:
1) Purchase the Site Redirect upgrade, which will point all traffic to your WordPress site to an external URL (your Etsy store), or,
2) Transfer your domain to another registrar that offers a domain forwarding tool as part of their domain registration service.
Just let me know if you have questions about either option.
-
OK, I’m getting closer! :)
I do have a bundled upgrade package ($99/year). Is the ‘site redirect’ an additional $13/year on top of that? If so, would I have two different renewal dates, one for my domain upgrade package, and one for the redirect?
Option 2) Transfer….
Do you mean transfer my domain name to another host, rather than having it through WP? If that is the case, then is it correct that I’d pay to have another site host my domain name (once it is released from WP) and then I’d need a different type of upgrade on WP to handle the extra file space I’m using?Hopefully my questions make sense…
Thanks for clarifying!!
Susan -
Is the ‘site redirect’ an additional $13/year on top of that?
Yes, the Premium bundle includes a domain name registration, and not a site redirect.
If that is the case, then is it correct that I’d pay to have another site host my domain name (once it is released from WP) and then I’d need a different type of upgrade on WP to handle the extra file space I’m using?
Just so I’m completely clear, do you intend to keep using your WordPress.com site under the original address, http://sosimplysusan.wordpress.com? Or is your Etsy store replacing your WordPress.com site?
Do you mean transfer my domain name to another host, rather than having it through WP?
No, not a host, but a domain registrar. Domain registrars handle the registration of a domain name. Some of them offer forwarding services, which point the domain name to another address.
-
Point 1: OK- understand the $13/year for site redirect.
Point 2: I do intend to keep using my WordPress.com site under the original address (sosimplysusan.wordpress.com). The etsy store is an additional thing.
Point 3: I guess I need to figure out if it makes more sense for me to make the switch to a domain registrar that can redirect, or keep it with WP and pay for the upgrade.
I’m thinking about the options. Thank you so much for all of your help!

Hi again Kathryn,
My bundle is about to auto-renew, and I’d like just a little more time to figure out how what’s best going to meet my needs. Is there a way to NOT have the auto-renewal happen the way it is currently scheduled (one month prior to my renew date) and instead let me renew manually, on the correct date?
If I do decide to remove my domain name hosting through WP, how would I go about making that change? Would I just change my premium package type to one that is just additional space, and once my domain name is released from WP I would be able to have it hosted from another source (one that includes the domain redirect)?
I also want to make sure that if I’m changing my upgrade package to a different one, that I do not lose any of my current content (if/when I deactivate the current bundle).
I hope that all makes sense.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Susan,
Is there a way to NOT have the auto-renewal happen the way it is currently scheduled (one month prior to my renew date) and instead let me renew manually, on the correct date?
Absolutely. You can turn off auto-renewal under Store > My Upgrades:
https://sosimplysusan.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=my-upgrades
Click the button that says Disable Auto Renew. Just be sure to do that in the next day or so, since the upgrade is set to auto-renew on September 23.
If I do decide to remove my domain name hosting through WP, how would I go about making that change?
By “domain name hosting” are you referring to your domain name registration for sosimplysusan.com? If so, you can transfer your domain name registration to another domain registrar by following these instructions. I suggest you start that process as soon as possible to make sure it’ll be completed before your bundle expires.
I also want to make sure that if I’m changing my upgrade package to a different one, that I do not lose any of my current content (if/when I deactivate the current bundle).
You won’t lose any content by not renewing your Premium bundle.
Since you have over 3 GB of files uploaded, you’ll need to purchase a Space Upgrade to upload new files, but your existing ones will never be removed.
Just let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi again Kathryn,
Thanks for your last reply- it all made sense to me- hooray!
I think I am down to my last few questions in order to sort this all out. Thank you for your patience!
My brother is helping me with designing a website (and assisting me with figuring out what will work re: redirect, etc., for my needs) so he’s asked if I can clarify these final points:
1) Will my current WP bundle allow me to:
– create a separate, custom website through WordPress?
– if so , could that include my blog?
– if yes to the blog, then could I set up a new blog on that new website (which would be at the direct .com domain address), PLUS keep my existing blog content separate under the old address (sosimplysusan.wordpress.com)
– also, could I have a link on this new website hosted by WP, to take people to my etsy shop?OR,
– Does my current WP bundle only allow me to customize my blog?2) WP registered my domain name through this bundle. Does this mean I own the domain name now, or does WordPress?
3) If I later decide to transfer my domain, can I do that and still have WP host my website? If so, what kind of package/rate would that be?
(This may have been answered in your previous replay, where you provided the link, but I wanted to ask it in this way in case it’s a slightly different question my brother is asking.)I hope these make sense in technical language… my brother understands this, but I am now the middle person. ;) We are hoping the first part of question 1 will work, so I could just keep my bundle with WP and add the $13/year domain redirect, which I would point directly to my etsy shop until my brother can design my new website.
Thank you so very much for helping me with this!!!

Hi Susan,
1) Will my current WP bundle allow me to:
– create a separate, custom website through WordPress?
– if so , could that include my blog?
– if yes to the blog, then could I set up a new blog on that new website (which would be at the direct .com domain address), PLUS keep my existing blog content separate under the old address (sosimplysusan.wordpress.com)
– also, could I have a link on this new website hosted by WP, to take people to my etsy shop?OR,
– Does my current WP bundle only allow me to customize my blog? The bundle adds additional features to one existing WordPress.com site/blog. Those features are described here:
http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/pro-bundle/I’m not sure what you mean by “a separate, custom website through WordPress” – separate from what? :-)
You can always create a new site anytime.
2) WP registered my domain name through this bundle. Does this mean I own the domain name now, or does WordPress?
You own the domain, with WordPress.com as the domain registrar.
3) If I later decide to transfer my domain, can I do that and still have WP host my website?
Yes, for sure. Many folks have domains registered elsewhere, but still mapped to a WordPress.com site. Check out our guide to mapping an existing domain:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/If so, what kind of package/rate would that be?
If you keep your Premium bundle, one domain mapping is included. If you purchase domain mapping on its own, it’s $13/year.
-
Hi Kathryn… guess who!! :)
I have just one last question for you now.
I did add the $13/year domain redirect feature and that is working great!
Now I’d like to ask, what is the difference between having the $99 premium upgrade package, vs. the “Add a Domain” option that is $5 registration + $13 mapping? Couldn’t I just do that, and then pay for a standard space upgrade, if all I’m using at this time is the existing blog, plus domain redirect? It will be a while before I’m ready to actually set up a blog with the new .com address.
Thank you!

Excellent!
what is the difference between having the $99 premium upgrade package, vs. the “Add a Domain” option that is $5 registration + $13 mapping?
The Premium bundle comes with many features aside from the domain registration and Space Upgrade, including VideoPress, No Ads, Custom Design and a few others. You can see the full list of what’s included here: http://store.wordpress.com/premium-upgrades/pro-bundle/
Couldn’t I just do that, and then pay for a standard space upgrade, if all I’m using at this time is the existing blog, plus domain redirect?
For sure! If you’re ready, I can remove the Premium upgrade so you can purchase the Space Upgrade on its own, and renew your domain separately as well. (You won’t lose any files in the process.)
-
OK, Kathryn, that is exactly what I’d like to do for now! :)
RE: “I can remove the Premium upgrade so you can purchase the Space Upgrade on its own, and renew your domain separately as well. (You won’t lose any files in the process.)”
So I’d like to get the minimum amount of space needed for now (to cover what I’m currently using), since I won’t be adding much to the blog this year.
I did already purchase the $13 domain name / redirect part, so is it correct that I will just need to next get the space upgrade separately?
Pls. just let me know when you’re ready on your end, and when I should process adding the space upgrade.
Thank you so much!
Susan
