Want to redirect my domain name to another location.

Hi there! I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to be taking over this ticket for Kathryn.
Just so I’m on the same page: you’d like to keep the domain sosimplysusan.com up to date, but you do not want to renew the associated premium bundle. Is that correct?
It also sounds like you wish to know which space upgrade to purchase for sosimplysusan.wordpress.com, but sosimplysusan.wordpress.com is currently pointing to your Etsy site, so I’m confused.
If you are using your WordPress.com site for something else, you won’t want the redirect upgrade because but would want to update the name servers on sosimplysusan.com to point to Etsy instead. Since it sounds like you were unable to do that with the domain registered at WordPress.com, you may need to transfer the domain to another registrar like GoDaddy or Namecheap.
For the space upgrade, if you are not pointing your WordPress.com site to Etsy, once I cancel the premium bundle you will be able to purchase a 10GB space upgrade here https://sosimplysusan.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php (right now you can’t because you already have it through the bundle).

Oh no… I hope this is not going to involve more than I thought… Let me try to summarize what I’d like to achieve:
1) Go back to the original WP blog, using standard address: http://www.sosimplysusan.wordpress.com
2) Keep the domain name that I previously registered through WP (www.sosimplysusan.com) AND have it redirect to my etsy shop (point to http://www.sosimplysusan.etsy.com).
This is what I understood would be possible with the separate $13 redirect feature, which so far is working.3) Cancel the $99 premium bundle (for now) and just add a standard space upgrade to accommodate my existing space usage (which you are recommending as 10GB).
My concern right now is if #2 is not possible…. Is there a reason why I would not be able to redirect my domain name to the etsy site, and still keep my old blog address through WP?
Thank you for your help, Jackie!

The redirect is working because your domain sosimplysusan.com is mapped to your WordPress.com site. As you will see at https://sosimplysusan.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains , all of your traffic to sosimplysusan.wordpress.com AND sosimplysusan.com are pointing to Etsy for now.
I did some research and it looks like the only way to point a domain to an Etsy site is via a redirect, as they are not a hosting provider and do not provide name servers you can use. This is a limitation on Etsy’s site, not on ours, as we allow users to change the name servers on a domain to point to other hosting providers and website platforms.
The best workarounds I can think of right now would be one of the following:
1) Create a new blog on WordPress.com (with any name) and have me move your domain/redirect to that blog, just as a placeholder. This will free up sosimplysusan.wordpress.com to function without the redirect.
2) Transfer your domain to another registrar and use that registrar’s redirect/forwarding option to point domain to Etsy.

Wow, Jackie, thank you for helping to sort all this out for me! It is really over my head in the technical department…
I’d like to stay with WP (since I so love you guys!) :) and then later be able to go back to the premium bundle at some point.
So… I set up a new blog address on WP as you suggested.
It is: http://www.shopwithsusan.wordpress.comIs that all you need in order to do the redirect to feed into etsy, and keep my original blog (sosimplysusan.wordpress.com) as it used to be (where I will then go in and purchase the 10GB space upgrade)?
Hopefully I’m following you and have this right! :) I will be so happy when this is all in place– I know my renewal date is getting close!

I actually intended for you to create a new blog under the same WordPress.com account. Could you please post in this thread from the new account to authorize me moving the blog to your sosimplysusan account? From there I can move your upgrades to that blog for you.

Oh my goodness, Jackie, I’m so sorry! I am feeling really inept with all this… totally not my area of understanding! I really apologize for the extra efforts on your part!
I could not figure out how to post to this thread from the new acct…. so I did just see where I could add a new blog to my existing account. (Oh brother!) I just set up “sosimplynew” on this account.
Now I’m going back in to see how I can cancel/remove the other (separate) new blog address…
I’ll wait to hear from you on the redirect part and when to purchase the space upgrade.
So sorry I’m so “slow!” :/

It’s okay. :)
To post here from another account, you just need to log out of one account, log into the other, and return to this thread. And while doing so might have sounded silly since you obviously created the account, I needed that for security reasons.
Since you have created a new blog under this account, however, that will work. :)
I have moved your domain registration and redirect to sosimplynew.wordpress.com. Now if someone goes to that address, or more importantly, to sosimplysusan.com, they will be redirected to your Etsy site.
Your WordPress.com site sosimplysusan.wordpress.com now appears as expected. I have cancelled the Premium bundle upgrade, which was set to expire today, so you can now purchase the 10GB space upgrade to allow you to post new content.
Because of the hassle involved in this, I have renewed your domain sosimplysusan.com for a year on the house. :)

Oh wow, you are WONDERFUL, Jackie!! Thank you for that! (The separate domain name renewal is yet another thing I didn’t realize I needed to get until you just explained it…) :)
While this was mentally exhausting for my technically-challenged brain, I wish I could do something nice for YOU as a thank you for all your help!! If you were near I’d bake you a nice batch of home made cookies! :)
Thanks again for your patience in explaining things and holding my hand through the process. You have no idea my anxiety level over all of this (for months now!) and I am sooo relieved it’s now all in place.
Have a fantastic rest of your week!

PS– If you don’t mind one last peek…. could you just pop over and make sure I did the upgrade part right– I didn’t remember hitting ‘pay’ (it happened so fast?!) but I believe it’s all set now and just wanted the reassurance I didn’t goof that up, lol.
Take care!

Susan, I’m so glad it all worked out for you!
Mmm the cookies would be great! If you bake a batch, please eat them slowly and enjoy them on my behalf… or better yet, give them to someone who needs a pick me up. :)
