Want to Tranfer Blog, Must be FTP
-
I was hoping to host my blog with the company that I registered my domain name with, but they said the only way to export it to them is via FTP files, which I cannot get access to. Is there any way to use the XML files that WordPress allows in export and still transfer the blog as a whole?
Everything points to “no,” but I am hoping there’s something that’s possible. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Understand that themes cannot be transferred and are not included in XML export files. Maybe you could transfer the content by RSS Feed https://domesticvocation.wordpress.com/feed/ Check with the host.

Thanks for your quick reply. I’ll ivestigate and make my decision on what to do from there.

1 and 1. They said the only thing they could do was with FTP.
Here is what they told me:
I understand, unfortunately, there is no way for me to help with this. My best suggestion is to go into WordPress Forums and see if this is brought up in there. They have excellent Forums with a lot of information. 1&1 doesn’t support WordPress directly, so, the only way that we would be able to assist in this part of the process would be if there’s FTP information. ^ta
Okay, once you get the old website up, it will be on 1&1 to help you with. It’s just until then, we cannot support it. I hope that makes sense. ^ta
I’m not informed enough to know how else to move it. All their website suggests is using the export plug-in, which won’t work for a non-Wordpress.org site.

Hi there,
Will you be installing the WordPress.org software at 1&1? Or are you going to use different software to build your site?
If you’ll be using WordPress, install WordPress and create the site. Then log into the WP-Admin dashboard, click on Tools ->Import, install the WordPress importer, and you’ll be able to import the .xml files you exported from us.
If you’ll be using a different CMS from WordPress that doesn’t support .xml import files, we won’t be able to help you. There is no way to export content from a WordPress.com site in any other format, and template and database files on WordPress.com cannot be exported at all, period.
So if that’s the case your only option would be to set up a self-hosted WordPress site first, import your content there, and then get a full site backup of that site/give 1&1 FTP access to export it for you.
