Want to upgrade domains, but make sure old site sends people to new domain

I have had a wordpress account for a few days now and I have a significant following (it’s all relative, but almost 400 views is big for me). I would like to upgrade my domain to not include the wordpress in the website title, i.e. just susanmaryetta.com. However, I have sent my susanmaryetta.wordpress.com link to a lot of people already, so before I buy the upgrade, I wanted to make sure that if someone goes to the old site, it will redirect to the new one. Does this happen or do I have to send out the new address to everyone so that my viewers will realize there is a new site.

If you buy the upgrade BOTH URLs will work for as long as you have the upgrade. You can set either as primary, although I recommend the custom one. All your existing readers will still find you.
