Want to Upgrade My Theme
-
If I subscribe for my own domain, will that give me the option of changing/upgrading my theme or is that only done if you pay for wordpress.org?
Also, if I do this, do you know if I have the option of not being found via serach engines (the same option that’s available with a free wordpress account)?

At wordpress.COM, you are limited to the themes listed under appearances > themes. If you are experienced with CSS, you can stylize the themes here with the paid CSS upgrade, but since there is no official support for the upgrade, it is best to learn CSS first.
Buying a domain and the domain upgrade will not allow you to use themes downloaded from the internet. You will still be limited to the ones listed in the wordpress.COM dashboard.
If you self-host your blog using the software downloaded from wordpress.ORG, then you can use any theme you want and you can also use plugins and you can advertise if you want to. You have a lot more freedom, but that freedom comes at a cost. You are responsible for all upgrades, troubleshooting, maintenance and backups. If something goes wrong, it is basically your problem. You also have to know how to FTP to be able to upload themes and plugins, and to do upgrades.
At wordpress.COM, they take care of all the back-end stuff and all you have to worry about is blogging, but with that comes some limitations on what you can do.
