want to use images on category list in sidebar

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I’d like to show images related to my categories in the sidebar – rather than just listing the category names. Is there a way to do that? Is it possible to adapt the Gallery Widget to do that, e.g. by somehow linking an image to a category? Would I have to make a hidden menu? Thank you.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there. This is not possible with the category widget. The only way to do this would be to manually add the images with the related category links into a text widget. You’ll have to do everything in html to do this, it won’t display the number of posts per category as the widget does. Let us know if you need help with that.

What if I use the image widget? Could I then have it link to the category topics?

  • You can, but the image widget can only show one image so you’ll have to insert a separate widget for each category.

Okay – right now I only have 5-6 categories so that would be doable (or I could just do top categories, I guess). So can you tell me how I would make an image link up to a category? Does that have to be done in HTML?

  • Upload the image to your media library. Then you have to view the image in the media library: click on Media ->Library in the dashboard, find the image and click Edit in the list view, or simply click the image in grid view. Look for the File URL heading. It should be to the top-right. Copy the URL you find there, and paste that into the image widget in the Image URL field.

For the category URL, go to Posts ->Categories in the dashboard. This will display a list of all your categories. Click on View under the category name to go to the category archive on your blog and copy the URL from your browser’s address bar. Paste that into the Link URL field of the image widget.

If you want the category name to display along with the image, type it in the Caption field, and if you want it as a tooltip, in the Title field. I’d suggest you type “Categories” in the widget title of the first widget, but leave it blank for the rest, then it should appear as if you have only one widget, but that will also depend on whether you theme adds extra styling like borders to the widget.

You can also change the display size of the image be adjusting the width and height fields when you insert the widget if you don’t want the image to be the full width of the sidebar.
